As a PhD candidate you will mainly focus on three aspects within a prestigious NWO-TTW-VICI project that is based on implementing image guidance techniques in the field of image guided surgery. Firstly, you will look at how technical innovations, for instance in the area of robot guided surgery, can improve the precision of surgical interventions. Next, you will focus on questions as to how a balance can be created between the realization of quality results in the area of health care management and side effects that occur as a result of a surgical intervention. Finally, you will focus on the technological chain of (robotic)surgery wherein image guided surgery techniques, like fluorescence, augmented and virtual reality, can offer a solution.

While your colleagues work on tracer development (chemistry) and clinical implementation studies (medicine), you will focus, together with a postdoc, on the technological aspects of the research. One of the challenges in the integration of hardware (such as multi-spectral fluorescence camera’s) and software (such as navigation by means of augmented and virtual reality) is the surgical workflow. Together with colleagues with a background in biology or medicine you will evaluate your developed concepts in the (pre) clinical surgical environment of ORSI Academy. Based on the results, we will then, as a team, look at the possibilities to start up a clinical follow-up study with one of our (inter)national partners.

We are looking for an excellent and ambitious candidate with an MSc degree in biomedical engineering or a similar area. You have proven experience with the engineering of hard- and/or software and have an interest in medical research. You are enthusiastic, driven and accurate, and possess excellent social and organizational skills. A strong sense of independence and resourcefulness will work as a stimulus for the close collaboration between the LUMC, NKI-AvL and ORSI Academy. Being fluent in English, both in writing and speech, is essential.

Fixed-term contract: duration project.

You will be employed on the basis of a 36-hour week. Appointment is for a maximum of four years, to be completed with a doctoral thesis. Your salary is € 2,357 gross per month in the first year, amounting to € 3,020 in the fourth year (scale PhD students, CAO-UMC).

Interventional Molecular Imaging Laboratory

The Interventional Molecular Imaging Laboratory (IMI-Lab) is a multidisciplinary research team that is part of the Department of Radiology, one of the biggest departments of the LUMC. The LUMC offers many opportunities for collaboration with students and postdocs and offers many opportunities for education through lectures, seminars and workshops. The IMI-Lab collaborates closely with doctors of the Dutch cancer institute - Antoni van Leeuwenhoek ziekenhuis (NKI-AvL, Amsterdam, Netherlands) for clinical studies. For pre-clinical evaluation and surgical training there is a close collaboration with ORSI Academy (Melle, Belgium).
