Associate Professor Position (tenured) Organization Studies/Global Management of Social Issues within the Philip Eijlander Diversity Program

Job description

Eligible candidates for this position should be specialized in education and research of organizing for ‘wicked problems’ (climate change, global warming, sustainable consumption, or inequality and poverty). Organizing for wicked problems requires social innovations and new organizational forms that concern the involvement of multiple stakeholders, collaboration in multidisciplinary, international network-based projects that execute tasks over multiple iterations over longer periods. Each of these aspects of organizing for wicked problems define important competences we are looking for in the ideal candidate.

 

The candidate is responsible for high quality teaching and research in the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the area of Organization Studies in general and "Global Management of Social Issues" in particular by:

  • Elaborating a global/international/comparative perspective to studying and addressing complex societal issues with focus on the role of international organizations and global governance;
  • Bringing and sharing deep expertise on Grand Challenges / wicked problems, especially in the area of sustainability;
  • Bringing and sharing deep expertise on new organizational forms (e.g. social entrepreneurship, platforms, and ecosystems);
  • Exploring new data analysis approaches. As an emerging new interdisciplinary field, data science provides new tools for analyzing social issues and evaluating interventions that aim at social innovation.

Requirements

Candidates for the position must have the following qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Organization and/or Management Studies or equivalent degree in a related or relevant field, with an interest in organization theory;
  • Evidence of sustained research achievements, reflected in peer-reviewed publications, preferably in top-tier outlets;
  • Have a solid background in current methodological/statistical development and preferably have ample experience in an interdisciplinary environment;
  • Genuine interest in working and performing in an multidisciplinary research environment;
  • Have the ability to obtain and manage research grants/experience or willingness to participate in research funding efforts;
  • Excellence or the potential for excellence, in teaching students, and a strong and demonstrable commitment to the organization and delivery of teaching;
  • Experience in assisting students and PhD’s while being a coach and a role model for all female students, postdocs and assistant professors;
  • Strong command of Dutch or the willingness to learn within 2 years;
  • Strong command of English (C2 level);
  • Preferably evidence of having successfully held a position of academic leadership.

 

The candidates are expected

  • To meet the criteria in terms of research quality, teaching quality, management responsibilities, proven valorization of their research and active role as member of the Department of Organization Studies;
  • To take an active role as role model or diversity agent in the university (e.g. by delivering a public lecture; by making their research available for a larger audience; by mentoring other junior women faculty; by incorporating gender as an integral part in the teaching and research programs).

  • A gross annual salary commensurate with experience and in accordance with Dutch national standards for the respective level of associate professorship;

Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences

 

The appointee will be embedded in the Department of Organization Studies at the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences of Tilburg University. Research in the department focuses on relations within and between organizations and their effects on organizations’ adaptive behavior (e.g., organizational learning, change, innovation, etc.). The department has a very strong research orientation with a focus on high-quality publications in leading journals. Our faculty publish in e.g. Administrative Science Quarterly, Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Annals, Organization Science, Organization Studies and Journal of Management. Members of the department supervise Bachelor and Master students and teach a variety of degree courses at both levels in the Organization Studies programs including the Bachelor track ‘Global Management of Social Issues’ and the Master specialization tracks ‘Global Management of Social Issues’. The last two programs focus on organizing for grand challenges. All programs and tracks (except for one of the bachelor programs) are taught in English. Non-Dutch-speaking candidates will be asked to teach in English only. The working language of the Department and School is English.
