Job description

The microeconomics section of the Amsterdam School of Economics (ASE), part of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), has two vacancies for Lecturers in Microeconomics (no research position), starting 1 September 2019. The task of the new hires will be the teaching of courses in the area of microeconomics as well as teaching of tutorials of first year and second year courses in mathematics and statistics.

Lecturers within the microeconomics section in general teach and coordinate microeconomics related courses at both the undergraduate (BSc) and the graduate (MSc) level, which range from first-year tutorials to supervising MSc theses. For the current lecturer position a substantial part of the teaching task consists of involvement in microeconomics and mathematics courses in the first two years of the BSc program in Economics and Business Economics and the BSc program in Business Administration.

Most of the section’s teaching is conducted in English, also at the undergraduate level; non-Dutch speakers are free to teach in English.

Requirements

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with outstanding teaching qualities from all major areas in microeconomics and with a clear affinity to teach mathematics and statistics to economics students are welcome.

Candidates should have or be close to completing a PhD in Economics with a clear microeconomics focus and should have experience in teaching, with good teaching evaluations.

Candidates will be evaluated on their potential for and/or record of excellence in teaching.

Conditions of employment

Appointment will be on a temporary basis, initially for two years, from 1 September 2019 until 31 August 2021. There is a possibility for extension. Both full-time and part-time appointments are possible.

Initial salary is between €3,123 and €4,978 gross per month (+16.3% holiday and end-year payments). This is based on 38 hours per week and in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities regulating employment conditions at Dutch universities. A substantial reduction in income tax (equal to 30% of taxable salary) may apply to non-Dutch appointees. The UvA offers a very attractive pension scheme.

Faculty of Economics and Business

The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) provides academic courses for more than 5,000 students in Economics and Business, Actuarial Sciences, Econometrics & Operations Research, Economics of Taxation, and a variety of post-doctoral courses. The Faculty also conducts research programmes in many specialist areas and employs about 400 people. The FEB has an internationally acclaimed profile and is located in the heart of Amsterdam. FEB consists of the Amsterdam Business School and the Amsterdam School of Economics (ASE). ASE is among the top economics research institutes in Europe.

Microeconomics is a section within ASE that covers three different research programmes: Experimental & Political Economics (CREED), Human Capital, and Markets & Organizations. The microeconomics section is responsible for teaching most microeconomics related courses at the BSc and MSc level. Its researchers also actively participate in the teaching and research activities of the Tinbergen Institute.
