About IHS

The Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) is a centre of urban development and management of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Description

This vacancy for a junior/mid-level urban economic specialist is aimed at strengthening consulting, research and education activities at the institute. The candidate will join the Urban Competitiveness and Resilience (UCR) team. This specialization focuses on the analysis of economic processes within cities and regions. The candidate is expected to focus on all three areas (consulting, research and education activities). These include acquiring and carrying out consulting and research assignments, teaching in the IHS master programme and professional courses, and publishing in peer-reviewed academic journals.

Qualifications and competencies we are looking for

We are asking for a candidate who:

  • Holds a Master and a PhD degree (or close to defending one) in economics, economic geography, public policy, urban management, development studies or a related social sciences discipline.

  • Has a proven focus on and interest in aspects of urban and/or regional economics, preferably in developing countries.

  • Has in-depth knowledge of quantitative methods (statistics and econometrics), including the advanced use of statistical software. Knowledge of GIS is considered an asset.

Requirements

Your competencies show your:

  • Experience in academic education, such as course coordination, lecturing, tutoring and thesis supervision.

  • Excellent analytical and research skills with a track record in academic publications or the potential to publish in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Work experience of some kind outside of academia and/or experience with project work and acquisition.

  • Excellent command of written and spoken English. Fluency in other languages, particularly French, is desirable.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: a period of 1 year, with possible extension of employment.

Terms & conditions of employment

  • The position is available in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, starting for a period of 1 year, with possible extension of employment, and is based on a minimum of 32 hours per week to a maximum of 40 working hours per week.

  • Remuneration will be in line with the responsibilities of the role and related to the work experience of the candidate. For full-time employment the minimum gross monthly salary is €2,709 and the maximum €4,274 based on 40 working hours per week and on salary scale 10, and the minimum €3,637 and the maximum €4,978 based on 40 hours per week and on salary scale 11 of the CAO NU.

  • We would like to have the candidate starting per September 2019, but can be negotiated if required.
