The Aerospace Engineering faculty focuses its efforts on the future of Green Aviation & Wind Energy. Its research program is connected with many on going international projects related to sustainable aviation & renewable energy generation. Growth in these areas has led to opening 5 positions.

Job description

The Department of Aerodynamics, Wind Energy, Flight Performance and Propulsion (AWEP) invites applications for Assistant Professors with a research focus in the following areas:

1. Wind Energy Systems

The successful candidate will join the research program on the design and operation of wind energy systems including wind farm design, layout optimisation, performance optimisation, system integration, logistics, operations and maintenance, particularly in the offshore environment. This work requires a broad understanding of wind energy systems and the mathematical tools required for optimisation and system simulation. Because of the multi-disciplinary nature of the research the candidate will be expected to work with colleagues within the Wind Energy Section; more widely within the university; with the Dutch and international academic sector and with industry on collaborative research in a range of areas related to wind energy systems

2. Novel propulsion and power system concepts

Candidates with a background in thermodynamics, turbomachinery, power and propulsion systems are encouraged to apply. The research entails innovative systems and configurations for propulsion and power generation, with use for aerospace and ground applications. Specific expertise in power cycles, such as  the organic Rankine and the supercritical CO2 cycles, is valued. Expertise is required in the design and realization of experiments in the recently established Aerospace Propulsion and Power laboratory facilities.

3. Sustainable aircraft engines

Lowering CO2, as well as NOx, emissions from aviation requires radical innovation and technical advancements for the development of next-generation turbofan engines based on new gas turbine architectures, hybrid‐electric propulsion systems, engines fuelled by non-conventional energy sources, and engine‐aircraft integration. A background on aircraft propulsion and the domains of fundamental heat transfer, combustion, electromagnetism and multiphysics/multidisciplinary problems thereof, is valued. The candidate is expected to operate within a wide team of experts with skills ranging from thermodynamics and turbomachinery to aircraft design.

4. Advanced aerodynamic flow control

The successful candidate will join the research towards a better fundamental understanding of the working principles of flow control methods for drag reduction and separation prevention in high Reynolds number flows through modeling and numerical simulations. A research background in fluid dynamics, numerical methods for scientific computing and experience with Large-Eddy or Direct Numerical Simulations of turbulent flows are required. Expertise in flow actuators, control theory, and flow stability theory is also highly valuable. The candidate shall be committed to close collaboration with a versatile group including computational and experimental experts.

5. Aircraft noise control

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of experimental and numerical methodologies and processes for understanding, predicting and controlling aerodynamic noise generation mechanisms. The research challenges will lie in both the aerospace and wind energy fields. They will work in close collaboration with colleagues in the Aeroacoustics group on experiments and numerical simulations of relevant aerospace problems, and will have the opportunity to establish collaborations across the department sections, in the domains of propulsion, aerodynamics and wind energy.

Additional key requirements for these positions are:

  • ability to supervise and motivate students;
  • ability to work effectively with undergraduate (Master and Bachelor level) students and PhD candidates;
  • good presentation and communication skills;
  • demonstrated proficiency in the written and spoken use of the English language as well as the willingness to learn Dutch.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made by the fifth year whether to offering you a permanent faculty position. For circumstances as having children or parental leave during the tenure track, it is possible to delay the definitive assessment and extend the Tenure Track appointment to a maximum of 8 years.

Faculty Aerospace Engineering

The faculty of Aerospace Engineering at Delft University of Technology is one of the world's largest faculties devoted entirely to aerospace engineering. In the Netherlands it is the only research and education institute directly related to the aerospace engineering sector. It covers the whole spectrum of aerospace engineering subjects. In aeronautics, the faculty covers subjects ranging from aerodynamics and flight propulsion to structures and materials and from control and simulation to air transport and operations. In astronautics, topics include astrodynamics, space missions and space systems engineering. The faculty has around 2,700 BSc and MSc students, 225 PhD candidates and 27 professors supported by scientific staff.

The Department of Aerodynamics, Wind Energy, Flight Performance and Propulsion (AWEP) is one of four departments of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. Research is conducted on a wide variety of topics by eight groups, each chaired by a Full Professor, subdivided in three sections (Aerodynamics, Wind Energy, Flight Performance and Propulsion). The staff of the department contributes to both the BSc and MSc educational programs, and is responsible for two MSc tracks with a strong focus on key disciplines related to future sustainable air transport and wind energy, covering both fundamental aspects and applications. The department also operates world-class laboratories, equipped with modern wind tunnels, process equipment and state-of-the-art measurement systems. Furthermore, a computer cluster is available for detailed numerical simulations on complex aerodynamic flows including aero-acoustics, combustion, and multidisciplinary physical problems.

The AWEP department plays an important role within the strategy of the Aerospace Engineering faculty, which is centered on the themes of future Green Aircraft and Wind Energy and its research program is propelled by many on‑going projects related to sustainable aviation and renewable energy generation.
