Job description

The Department of Precision and Microsystems Engineering (PME) at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) is opening three faculty positions (f/m) for the newly formed group Micro-Optics and Opto-Mechatronics (MOOM), to complement, extend and strengthen the PME Department.

We seek to appoint one full professor and two tenure track professors at assistant or associate level, depending on the candidates' stature.

The possibilities of using light to measure and control dimensions at the sub-nanometer level are revolutionizing our lives. Pushing the limits in size, speed and power consumption of these devices and at the same time address new applications that contribute to a sustainable future is a tremendous challenge. In the PME department we have a long track record in the design, manufacturing and characterization of precision mechanical systems. With the MOOM group we aim to address the need for precision optomechanical systems by attracting talented researchers in the field of micro-optics and optomechatronics. There is great freedom in shaping the new MOOM group, where the strength and vision of the candidates is more important than the specific topic. We welcome you to apply and help us form the new MOOM group.

The new MOOM group will be embedded in existing collaborations between the PME Department and the neighbouring TU Delft groups such as the Smart Optics Lab (SOL) at the Delft Centre for Systems and Control (DCSC) and the Optics Research Group (ORG) at the Faculty of Applied Sciences. Also ample opportunities for collaboration exist with industry, which in this field is very strong in the Netherlands, including space technology and semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Dutch industry is in great need of students trained to bridge precision mechanical engineering and optics.

For the new MOOM group, the PME department is looking for candidates (f/m) with proven expertise in a cross field between mechanical engineering and optics, precision engineering, microfabrication, or any other relevant fields. The selected candidates are expected to contribute to research and education dedicated to the fundamental study and design of precision and/or micromachines in which optical systems are at the core of their functionality, with impact in science, society and industry. In particular, the candidates will lead research and education activities in one or more of the following or related themes:

- High-performance optical equipment and instrumentation
- Precision machines for light-guided micro and nanomanufacturing
- Optical medical devices for diagnostics and treatment
- Precise adaptive optomechanical systems for metrology, remote sensing and Earth observation
- Micro opto-electro-mechanical systems (MOEMS), for sensors, actuators
- Optics-based systems for high data-rate communication
- Flexible optical systems.
