Job description

Efficient energy use will be of crucial importance in the coming decades. As energy demand and availability fluctuate, there is considerable interest in the development of devices and materials for storing energy. To develop processes or apparatus for efficient storage and conversion of energy and mass, it is crucial to have a deep understanding of core disciplines such as thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. It is also important to have detailed knowledge on the apparatus level.
The offered positions explore the fields of energy storage and conversion technology, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and process technology. Research can be experimental, simulations, or theory, and can be either applied or fundamental. Important examples of possible research lines are multiphase flow, direct air capture and/or electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide, production of synthetic fuels, and heat pumps. The candidates will develop new research programs in the field of process and energy technology that fits within the department's strategy (see www.delftpe.nl). The candidates will initiate and coordinate research and will teach and supervise BSc, MSc, and PhD students. In principle, the positions will be filled at the Assistant Professor (tenure track) or the Associate Professor (tenured) levels. For exceptionally strong candidates, a procedure for appointment at the Full Professor level will be considered.

Requirements

We are looking for researchers with a strong background and PhD in mechanical engineering, physics, chemical engineering, or other relevant discipline. It should be clear that the researcher is ready to start her/his own research line, or already has such a research line. The candidate: (1) is able to bridge the gap between fundamental and more applied projects; (2) has excellent communication skills; and (3) is able to teach and supervise students at the BSc, MSc and PhD levels. We are both looking for candidates with a recently completed PhD (or in the process of completing a PhD), as well as more experienced candidates that already have a proven track record.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: tenure track.

The tenure-track position is offered for six years. The section leader, department leaders and the successful candidate will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. Formal feedback on performance and skills will be provided during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. Based on the performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made by the fifth year whether to offer a permanent faculty position. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, a permanent Assistant Professor position will be offered.
