Job description

You will become part of a team working on the development of different material platforms for Integrated Photonics. In particular, you will deal with the development of a low-loss silicon nitride on sapphire platform for the development of mid-infrared spectrometers, as targeted prototype/demonstrator in the project.

The project comprise modelling of the devices, the development of the fabrication process in the MESA+ Nanolab cleanroom facility, which has all necessary state-of-the-art microfabrication equipment required to carry out this work, and optical characterization in the facilities of the research group.

The projects will leverage our expertise in the development of low-loss waveguides for integrated photonics consolidating our international position in this field. The project is carried out in collaboration with industrial partners in the framework of the Photon Delta Growth Funds initiative.

Requirements

  • PhD degree in engineering physics, electrical engineering, materials engineering/science or photonics engineering, with a good background in cleanroom microfabrication, deposition of optical materials and design/simulation of optical devices.
  • You have a good team spirit and like to work in an interdisciplinary and internationally oriented environment.
  • You have a creative mindset and excellent analytical and communication skills.
  • Female candidates and members of minority groups are equally encouraged to apply as we strive for working in a well-balanced inclusive team.
  • An excellent command of English.

Conditions of employment

  • A full-time position for two years, and the flexibility to work (partially) from home.
  • Your salary and associated conditions are in accordance with the collective labour agreement for Dutch universities (CAO-NU).
  • You will receive a gross monthly salary ranging from € 3.877,- to € 5.090,-.
  • There are excellent benefits including a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%, and a solid pension scheme.
  • A minimum of 232 leave hours in case of full-time employment based on a formal workweek of 38 hours. A full-time employment in practice means 40 hours a week, therefore resulting in 96 extra leave hours on an annual basis.
  • Free access to sports facilities on campus.
  • A family-friendly institution that offers parental leave (both paid and unpaid).
  • Excellent career support and courses for your professional and personal development.

Department

The Integrated Optical Systems group consists in average of 6-7 PhD students, 2-3 MSc students, 2-3 post-docs and several staff members. Our vision is to develop novel materials, devices and integration technologies for Integrated Photonics to solve societal problems. We are part of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, which offers advanced characterization and fabrication tools at the nanoscale, as well as a stimulating scientific environment with more than 250 PhD students working on various aspects of nanoscience and technology.

In addition, we are part of a group of around 80 researchers that explore, within the research cluster Applied Nanophotonics (ANP), multiple aspects of modern photonics. These include technologies such as the development of materials, integration technologies, photonic assembly, packaging, and laser processing for applications including quantum optics, control of light scattering, photonics crystals, XUV optics, biomedical imaging, and sensing.
