Job description

What you will do

  • You will help connect HAN programs and research centers and other knowledge institutions on the topic of "Social Impact of Digitization". You will contribute to the research mission and vision outlined in the Knowledge and Innovation Agenda of HAN and the School of IT and Media Design.
  • Based in part on your own professional network, you will acquire practice-oriented research and design projects in relevant IT applications. You will conduct this research with a team you form together with partner organizations, HAN staff and students.
  • You will be the figurehead and applied-scientific conscience of the constantly evolving Information & Communication Technology program. You will contribute to the development of new and innovative curricula and liaise with lecturers, students and professional parties about the education.
  • You will work seamlessly with the three other research groups in the School of IT and Media Design, with other research groups, and with professional learning/working communities of students, staff, researchers, and professional parties.
  • You will generate internal and external visibility for HAN's research and innovation activities and the school’s research team.
  • You will use your position at HAN to be at the forefront of the public debate on the impact of digitalization.

What we expect from you

  • Together with three other professors and one professor by special appointment, you will lead the IT and Media Design research team, which currently consists of about 20 people.
  • Acquisition: you will acquire and develop practice-oriented research projects.
  • Research coordination: plan, conduct, document and manage practice-oriented research projects, including reporting to clients, professional practice and the scientific community.
  • Knowledge sharing: you will work to develop and share knowledge areas such as digital twins, simulations and simulation tools, agent-based simulations, 3D simulations, and virtual software and hardware.
  • You will further the transfer of knowledge from your research perspective to education.
  • You will supervise HAN staff and students in their research activities, including the supervision of PhD students.
  • You will actively contribute to the organizational development of HAN and the School of IT and Media Design.

Requirements

What we are looking for

We are seeking an experienced researcher with a PhD and proven leadership skills and a demonstrated ability to independently acquire and conduct research. You have the creativity to translate the opportunities, possibilities and challenges in the field into promising innovative research proposals and projects. We expect you to have a good network of national and regional contacts within and beyond the work field. You have a track record of externally funded projects and scientific and other publications. You have experience as a daily supervisor of one or more PhD candidates.

The core of the position is practice-based research, but you will also play a role in the development of the curriculum for Information & Communication Technology, and master-level modules. Relevant teaching experience is, therefore, a must. You can work and think in a strategic and structured way. You are a role model for lecturers, students and researchers wishing to develop in this ever-changing field. You have oral and written communication skills in Dutch and English; German is a welcome addition.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

About the team and the School of IT and Media Design

The research team of the School of IT and Media Design consists of four research groups in the field of IT and Media that work closely together and present a single front to the outside world. We are a meeting place for professors, researchers, lecturers, students and industry partners with a strong interest in innovative research. The team members are committed to digital innovation based on key technologies and methodologies that have proven their value to individuals, organizations and society. We focus our research to achieve goals such as those within the three HAN key areas of Smart, Clean and Social.

The School of IT and Media Design currently offers two programs: Communication and Multimedia Design and Information & Communication Technology. The school's 220 staff members currently teach more than 2,500 students to meet the high demand for ICT-savvy communication professionals and communication-savvy ICT professionals. The school has four research groups that play an important role in:

  • Innovation for the degree programs and the field.
  • Strengthening and expanding human-centered and inclusive practice-oriented research in IT and media within and beyond HAN.
  • Enhancing and specializing the research capacity of students and staff in the school and professionals in the field.
  • Recruiting, conducting and supervising high quality practice-based research.
