Job description

We are pleased to announce that the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Eindhoven University of Technology is opening a PhD position in Statistics. We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic candidate with a background in Mathematics/Statistics to join the Statistics Group and conduct research in the area of dependence modeling and copulas.

Dependence modeling is crucial in many applied fields where practitioners are interested in (1) detecting complex dependences in the data and (2) representing them in the modeling and estimation process through suitable statistical models. Copulas serve as powerful mathematical tools to construct flexible statistical models to represent complex dependence traits, such as tail dependence, non-exchangeability, positive/negative dependence properties.

This project is expected to lead to novel theoretical and methodological results in the field of copula-based modeling. Although the focus is on theory, there will be possibilities to showcase the developed methodology in applied domains, such as climatology and weather forecasting.

Requirements

  • A Master's degree in Mathematics (with specialization in Statistics/Probability) or in Statistics;
  • A strong curiosity and interest in statistical theory and methods;
  • Experience with statistical programming languages and tools (such as R, Python);
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English;
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary context.

Conditions of employment

A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:
  • Full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation (go/no-go) after nine months. You will spend 10% of your employment on teaching tasks.
  • Salary and benefits (such as a pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (min. €2,770 max. €3,539).
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • High-quality training programs and other support to grow into a self-aware, autonomous scientific researcher. At TU/e we challenge you to take charge of your own learning process.
  • An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children's day care and sports facilities.
  • An allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • Staff Immigration Team and a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) for international candidates.
