Job description

Engineering

Given the ever-greater influence of technology in our daily lives and in knowledge production, UCR launched an Engineering Major in September 2020. UCR is located at the heart of the Scheldt Delta, so issues like sea-level rise, climate change, reductions in biodiversity, the generation of sustainable energy, desalination, pollution, and waste management are key. Engineering courses focus on high-tech solutions and connect insights from engineering with the sciences, social sciences, and arts & humanities.

Your job
UCR is looking for an Education and Research Support Officer with a strong profile in chemistry and life science. The officer will assist in courses and group projects related to chemistry, life science, and related fields (including organizing workshops on specific topics) and in guiding individual student projects in these fields. Furthermore, the staff member will be responsible for the organization and maintenance of the laboratory facilities in UCR’s Anne building and will coordinate the use of the laboratory facilities in the Joint Research Centre Zeeland, in close collaboration with the colleagues there. The officer is also expected to contribute to public-relations activities such as open days, science fairs, and high-school science projects.

Requirements

The ideal candidate has:
  • a background in chemistry and/or life science, ideally functioning at HBO-level, ,
  • experience with running a laboratory facility, including the planning and scheduling of lab sessions, preparation of set-ups, ordering of materials, and contacts with suppliers and maintenance providers,
  • preferably experience in instructing and guiding individual students and groups of students,
  • affinity with organizing skills and safety workshops,
  • a service-focused, proactive, and flexible attitude,
  • the ability to interpret scientific work, and
  • good command of the English language.

Conditions of employment

We offer a one-year appointment as an Education and Research Support Officer at UCR in Middelburg. The first year will be a probationary period; following positive assessment in the first year, the position will be extended for an indefinite period of time. The employment will be for 0.6 fte (22.8 - 24 hours per week).

Salary will be based on VSNU salary scales in accordance with scale 8 (min. € 3,072.- to max. € 4,103.-) of the Collective Labor Agreement Dutch Universities. Commuting costs within the Netherlands will be partly reimbursed according to the policy. Furthermore, UCR offers secondary benefits such as:
