Department

The Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM), embedded in the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU), the Netherlands, performs cutting-edge biomedical research to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying human diseases. The department (>180 people) performs multidisciplinary fundamental and translational research in relation to a variety of diseases, including cancer and genetic disorders. The highly collaborative nature within the CMM and the use of state-of-the-art technologies is key to our success, and enables the study of disease-causing mechanisms at different scales; from single genes and molecules to organisms. We have in-house facilities for genomics, proteomics, spatial omics, metabolomics, and advanced light- and electron-microscopy. In addition, we have an in-house bioinformatics support facility. The CMM is committed to striving for clinical translation and academic entrepreneurship to increase the impact of fundamental science discoveries, and innovate diagnosis and treatment of human disease. In addition, we educate the next generation of biomedical professionals at the level of BSc, MSc, PhD and Tenure track Principal Investigators. CMM's finances rely heavily (2/3) on externally funded projects (e.g. EU, NWO, KWF, TKI).
