Job description

The main focus of the thesis trajectory is to unravel the bleeding phenotype of several patient populations with congenital bleeding disorders. Hemostasis is a physiological process with the aim to prevent or stop bleeding. This process includes the interaction of many enzymes, proteins, blood cells and endothelial cells. When one of these components is insufficient or absent and not adequately compensated by another component, a person is prone to bleed. This can cause severe co-morbidity, reduced quality of life and even decreased survival. Are you our new PhD candidate?

This current PhD position compromises a clinical scientific collaboration between Radboudumc and the not-for-profit scientific organization of Synapse Research Institute. Synapse Research Institute has developed a novel hemostasis assay which can measure the breakdown of a blood clot, the plasmin generation assay. This assays will be performed in all patient categories, once they have been recruited. Subsequent clinical information from the bleeding tendency and quality of life will be collected as well.

The Hemophilia Treatment Centre of the Radboudumc has a large cohort of patients with congenital bleeding disorders. Hence, most of the activities of the PhD will take place in the clinical setting of the hemophilia treatment centre. You will work together in a team with a colleague PhD from the Laboratory of Hematology to perform the different hemostasis assays. You will be appointed by Synapse Research Institute and your primary working place will be the Radboudumc.

Tasks and responsibilities
  • Co-writing documents for the clinical research for approval from the medical ethical committee.
  • Successfully complete the BROK course.
  • Recruitment of patients for the clinical study.

  • Analyse clinical data and data from hemostasis assays.
  • Work together with the PhD from the Laboratory of Hematology to validate the plasmin generation assay.
  • Write scientific publications.
  • Present your scientific work during (inter)national congresses.
  • Participate in education from the department of Hematology.
  • Collaborate with the supervising team (promotors and co-promotors) and colleague PhD students, with public (Radboudumc) and private (Synapse) partners.

Requirements

Our new PhD candidate is successfully graduated in the master Medicine (basis doctor) and can speak and write excellently in Dutch and English. You are a team player, with excellent communication skills to participate in meetings with colleagues from public (Radboudumc) and private (Synapse) partners.

  • You are highly motivated to analyze the generated data and translate the results into public scientific papers.

Conditions of employment

You will be appointed by Synapse Research Institute and your primary working place will be the Radboudumc.
