Job description

Do you like coordinating a specialized laboratory in a research environment? Are you interested in working with environmental scientists, archaeologists, and geologists? And are you not afraid of working in a darkroom? Then we are looking for you!

As laboratory coordinator and principal technician of the luminescence dating laboratory of Wageningen University and Research, you are responsible for everyday lab functioning, lab safety and efficient lab use. Supervised by the laboratory director, you coordinate the lab activities of technicians, students and researchers. You organize throughput of projects and act as contact point for clients. In addition, you develop lab protocols, maintain and trouble-shoot laboratory equipment, and train students and PhD candidates who make use of the facility. Furthermore, you work as a lab technician: preparing sediment samples for luminescence dating analysis, performing measurements with dedicated instruments, analyzing data with dedicated software packages and the R programming language for statistical computing and visualization. Finally, you contribute to reports for clients and occasionally to scientific papers. All in all, this is a highly diverse and dynamic job with a wide range of responsibilities. Every day is different.

You will work here
At the Netherlands Centre for Luminescence dating, we develop and improve luminescence dating & tracing methods and we apply luminescence dating in collaboration with NCL partners and external users. The NCL is hosted by Wageningen University, and closely affiliated with the Soil Geography and Landscape group. The NCL facility is unique for the Netherlands; it consists of two spacious darkroom labs equipped with amber safelights. One lab is dedicated for sample preparation, while the other houses state-of-the-art instrumentation, including five Risoe TL/OSL readers of which two can perform single-grain analyses. Sample handling takes place in these darkrooms, while many of the coordination activities and the analyses of data are performed in an office environment.

Requirements

You are a pro-active and responsible team player, and thrive in a research environment where flexibility is the norm.

You also possess:
  • The skills to coordinate activities and people in a research laboratory;
  • A completed education or proven competency as laboratory technician;
  • Experience with analyzing and visualizing data, preferably with R or similar tools;
  • Several years of relevant work experience, preferably in a research or academic setting;
  • Affinity with environmental and/or archaeological research;
  • Prior experience with luminescence dating is preferred, but not required.

Given the international working environment, a substantial portion of the communication is in English. For this position, a C1 equivalent level of English proficiency is required. Might you not yet master this level, support is available, on the job or via our language center Wageningen in’to Language. As many of our clients are from the Netherlands, you should also master Dutch or be willing to learn Dutch within a few years.

WUR welcomes applications from international candidates. However, for applicants for this specific position from outside the EU/EFTA zone, immigration restrictions may apply based on Dutch and EU immigration laws. Such candidates may be eligible for an “orientation year” in the Netherlands or a visa as a “knowledge migrant”.

Conditions of employment

Wageningen University & Research offers excellent terms of employment. A few highlights from our Collective Labour Agreement include:
  • sabbatical leave, study leave, and partially paid parental leave;
  • working hours that can be discussed and arranged so that they allow for the best possible work-life balance;
  • there is a strong focus on vitality and you can make use of the sports facilities available on campus for a small fee;
  • a fixed year-end bonus of 8.3%;
  • excellent pension scheme.

In addition to these first-rate employee benefits, you will of course receive a good salary. Depending on your experience, we offer a competitive gross salary of between €3.537 and €4.860 for a full-time working week of 38 hours, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) (scale 9). This position is in principal for 0.8-0.9 FTE, although other arrangements can be discussed.
