Work Activities
Are you passionate about science communication and skilled at making complex knowledge accessible to a broad audience? AMOLF and ARCNL are looking for an enthusiastic and pragmatic Communications Officer to join our Communications team.

As a Communications Officer, you play a key role in translating e.g. research projects, insights and personal stories into compelling content that strengthens the visibility and reputation of both institutes to (potential) partners, funders, scientists, and PhD and postdoc students. You will develop and deploy content across multiple channels, ensuring that our research and activities reach relevant audiences effectively.

In this role, you will:
  • Initiate and deliver internal and external communications, including events, media, outreach activities, student visits, and public engagement activities;
  • Create and deploy content for websites, LinkedIn, Instagram, press releases, newsletters, intranet, and other communication platforms;
  • Collaborate with top scientists and passionate PhD and postdoc students, translating their findings and stories into clear, accessible communications;
  • Contribute to strategic communication initiatives that enhance the reputation of AMOLF and ARCNL;
  • Maintain and optimize digital tools and platforms to enhance outreach and engagement;
  • Support communication activities of researchers and students as needed.

Qualifications
We are looking for a smart, pragmatic go-getter who is effective at getting things done by listening, thinking, and doing. The ideal candidate has:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (HBO or university level) in communications or marketing (ideally in science communication), academic working and thinking level;
  • Excellent writing skills in English. Dutch proficiency is an advantage;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team;
  • Affinity for science, preferably a scientific background;
  • A flexible, hands-on attitude with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment;
  • Affinity for digital skills and familiarity with digital tools and communication platforms.

Experience in a communications or marketing role is preferred, ideally in in a knowledge-driven organization.

Work environment
The Communications team supports two research institutes: AMOLF and ARCNL. These institutes are located at the Amsterdam Science Park and currently employ about 240 researchers and 80 support employees.

AMOLF conducts leading fundamental research on the physics of complex matter, in partnership with academia and industry, to gain valuable insights, create new functional materials, and find solutions to societal challenges in renewable energy, green ICT, sustainable materials, and healthcare.

ARCNL carries out cutting-edge research in physics and materials science to advance nanolithography, strengthening the research system in nanolithography technology, and accelerating the transition from fundamental discovery to implementation in the semiconductor industry.

Working conditions

  • The Communications team, which consists of four enthusiastic communication professionals, is in the midst of a professionalization process;
  • The position is for 32 - 40 hours per week and an employment contract for two years, with the intention of subsequently offering permanent employment;
  • Salary will be € 3.622 to € 4.993 gross per month for full-time employment (depending on your education and experience), plus a holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus, following the Dutch Collective Labor Agreement (CAO) for research institutes;
  • Excellent fringe benefits, such as travel reimbursement, pension contributions, on-the-job training and study facilities.
