AUC is looking for an enthusiastic Internal Communications Officer, with copywriting/web editor skills and an interest in content creation and developing internal communication improvement strategies, to join its services & communications team.
Come work with us Amsterdam University College (AUC) is a joint institute of the University of Amsterdam and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offering a bachelor’s programme in Liberal Arts and Sciences for about 900 highly motivated students who all live on our residential campus in Amsterdam Science Park. The Internal Communications Officer will work closely with the other members of the
communications team to manage, deliver and improve AUC’s range of internal communications to AUC students and staff.
In this dynamic role, duties will vary from independently executing hands-on copywriting/web-editing tasks, to mapping internal information flows, but also developing longer term, bigger solutions for (internal) communications challenges together with the rest of the team, or with the UvA or VU. Communications tasks will be primarily in English, the working language in AUC. Meetings with stakeholders may at times be a mix of Dutch and English
. This is what you are going to do Duties and tasks for this role consist of three main components, with the majority being internal communications through mostly digital channels, while a smaller component dedicated to print and design tasks, as well as the support of the general tasks of the communications team (including maintaining a house style, tone of voice, uniform visual identity etc.).
The Internal Communications Officer will be responsible for:
- managing the information flow to students and staff (internal audiences), through various channels such as our website, newsletters, mailings and releases, general digital copy and narrowcasting screens;
- producing accurate and engaging written content and imagery for staff and students, including online content, newsletter input, announcements, emails, narrowcasting slides, annual reviews etc.;
- keeping track of yearly recurring content cycles as well as student and staff journeys, and updating the most important content for our internal student site and employee pages accordingly;
- Creating and maintaining internal distribution lists and databases for various channels;
- Developing ad hoc internal communications plans for active and emerging audiences (e.g. new students) or projects, and creating the necessary content based on information gathered or sourced from other teams within AUC.
A number of recurring hands-on tasks in communications will also be part of the role, such as:
- Maintaining AUC’s internal events calendar and promoting events;
- Acting as the community manager of an internal MS Teams group, wiki and sharepoint page;
- Managing the daily content that is displayed through the narrowcasting screens in the building;
- Updating pinboards and notice boards within AUC;
- Following the student and employee journey through the year and signalling relevant communications accordingly;
In the year 2025, the internal communications officer will also spearhead a project (in collaboration with the UvA web team) to use their standard CMS to create an internal employee website for AUC staff, including pages with information for lecturers about teaching (how to..) at AUC. The internal communications officer will report to the Department Head of the Services & Communications team.
This is what we ask of you Experience required:
- junior or medior experience in communications;
- experience in copywriting is a plus;
- experience with content creation and dissemination through a variety of media;
- experience in a small organisation, e.g. a start-up or charity, where people have a multitude of tasks is also considered a plus;
Knowledge and skills required:
- excellent verbal and written communication skills in English (required) and in Dutch (preferred);
- ability to write engaging texts that communicate messages to internal audiences in clear words and an engaging tone of voice;
- well-developed digital skills in tools such as Microsoft Office 365, MS Teams, Miro and experience with a newsletter tool or a CMS;
- good organisational and time management skills, and the ability to work on a number of different projects at once;
- experience with or a good eye for simple video or image editing could be an advantage;

This is what we offer you This position is for 27-30.4 hours a week (approx. 0.7/0.8 fte, 38 hours is fulltime), starting as soon as possible. The appointment is offered for one year initially, with the outlook of extension to a permanent contract after the first year. Depending on experience, the salary for the position is €3537 - €4860 gross per month (salary scale 9 ), based on 38 hours per week.
This is where you will work The multidisciplinary Services & Communications team is responsible for internal and external communications, marketing and recruitment, overseeing AUC's media channels and messaging, organising events, student life and community building, and overseeing the student journey from first contact to graduation. The team consists of 10 colleagues in total, including
three communications specialists, and a number of other services such as Study Abroad, Career, Alumni relations and Student Life support.
