Job description

Are you a historian of ancient or medieval philosophy and a passionate researcher and teacher? Join the Center for the History of Philosophy and Science (CHPS) as an Assistant Professor in a dynamic, collaborative research environment.

The Department of History of Philosophy is seeking an Assistant Professor.

You should have a broad background in the history of ancient and medieval philosophy, enabling you to teach courses in ancient and medieval philosophy, including some Arabic philosophy, at the Bachelor's level, and courses in your area of specialisation at the Master's level. You should also be able to teach the relevant academic skills and supervise students writing their Bachelor's or Master's theses. Fulfilling the teaching needs of the department requires sufficient mastery of the Dutch language by the start of the appointment.

We are specifically looking for someone who can complement and reinforce the research carried out at our Center for the History of Philosophy and Science (CHPS). CHPS studies philosophy and science as historically intertwined fields from Antiquity to the current age. Its members have a shared interest in the longue durée evolution of concepts, approaches and methods related to understanding the natural world. Ideally, you have a broad international network and conduct research at the intersection of the history of philosophy and the history of science.

You will play an active role in departmental and faculty activities and you will therefore be expected to take residency in or near Nijmegen.

You will be offered a 0.8 FTE appointment with the possibility of a temporary extension to 1.0 FTE. This position will involve 60% teaching, 35% research and 5% administrative duties.

Requirements

  • You should have completed a PhD in Philosophy or a related field. Ancient or medieval philosophy is your area of specialisation.
  • You are an inspiring teacher are able to teach Ancient and Medieval Philosophy, including some Arabic philosophy, and have a clear vision on education.
  • You are proficient in English and Dutch.
  • You are a team player, and take academic citizenship seriously.
  • You are preferably in possession of a University Teaching Qualification or are willing to obtain such a qualification within two years.

Conditions of employment

  • We will give you a temporary employment contract of 18 months with the prospect of an indefinite contract.
  • Your salary within salary scale 11 depends on your previous education and number of years of (relevant) work experience. The amounts in the scale are based on a 38-hour working week.
  • You will receive an 8% holiday allowance and an 8,3% end-of-year bonus.

  • You will receive extra days off. With full-time employment, you can choose between 30 or 41 days of annual leave instead of the statutory 20.
