Job description

The Aquaculture & Fisheries Group is looking for an independent research assistant/technician (full-time, 30,4- 38 hours/week) to support our laboratory-based research. In coordination with the other technicians of the team, you provide laboratory support to our research questions on in vitro, cell-based alternatives to reduce invasive animal experiments (mostly fish).

You are particularly cell-oriented while you have an interest in combining with (immuno) histological and molecular approaches. You support the long term research of scientific staff and PhD students while you help educate MSc students as part of their thesis research. Increasingly, you may be asked to support practical forms of classroom teaching. In short, you will have a versatile job in an international environment with a pleasant and open working atmosphere.

The Aquaculture and Fisheries (AFI) Chair Group is part of the Department of Animal Sciences at Wageningen University. It conducts research on nutrition, health and welfare of fish, shellfish and crustaceans in sustainable farming systems, ecological recovery of inland waters through fish-based monitoring, and estimation of data-poor fish stocks in sustainable fisheries in the North Sea. To all of these topics we are happy to link our teaching to BSc, MSc and PhD students.

Requirements

You are / You have :
  • responsible for your own task packages, you can pick up and perform tasks well and independently;
  • the ability to work accurately according to protocols which are continuously improved by yourself and others;
  • good communication skills and like to think in solutions;
  • open to learning new (laboratory) techniques and methods;
  • someone who enjoys working in an international working environment with people from different cultures and backgrounds.

In our international working environment communication in English is very important. For this position we are looking for someone with language level B2.

What do we ask for:
  • A completed HBO degree in animal, cell or molecular biology;
  • Interest in various laboratory analyses, especially cell culture based;
  • Having an article 13f6b license and interest in performing work with experimental animals (fish) is a plus;
  • Good proficiency in the English language both speaking and writing (language level B2).

Depending on your experience, we offer a competitive gross salary of between €2.872 and €3.454 for a full-time working week of 38 hours, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) (scale 6).
