Job description

Naturalis is looking for a Desk Editor!

About Naturalis
Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden is the Dutch national research institute for biodiversity and systematics. With our collection of 43 million specimens, one of the world's largest natural history collections, and our state-of-the-art research facilities, we offer the (inter)national research infrastructure for species identification and monitoring. We closely collaborate with many Dutch universities, research institutes, industry, and government. We host over 120 researchers, including 15 academia-embedded professors and 40 PhD students. We present the history of our planet and the diversity of life on Earth through permanent and temporary museum exhibitions, educational programmes, and online presence, with more than 400,000 visitors per year. All in all, a unique combination of science and culture in the Netherlands and elsewhere in the world!

The Position
As a desk editor, you will be responsible for the publication of scientific texts. This includes coordinating the editorial process, editing scientific manuscripts, and maintaining contact with authors, reviewers, and editors. You will be working for the scientific journals European Journal of Taxonomy and Blumea, whose editorial activities are hosted by Naturalis. You safeguard quality and timelines and coordinate the layout and distribution.

In this role, you are closely involved with new knowledge, developments, and research. Thanks to your efforts, scientific insights gain visibility!

General Requirements
A service-oriented mindset, with the ability to smoothly coordinate with all involved parties. You work with precision and accuracy and excel at keeping track of schedules and deadlines. You enjoy working independently and are proactive in identifying opportunities for improvement. You have a keen eye for detail and design. In addition, you have:

  • A completed academic degree and experience with the scientific publication process
  • Affinity with biodiversity
  • Knowledge of international copyright and intellectual property, bibliographic standards in science, and online publishing standards (HTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign
  • Excellent command of the English language, both written and spoken

The Department
The desk editors are part of the Research Coordination Office (RCO), alongside the policy officers, business developer, and education coordinator. Together, you ensure optimal support for the Research & Education sector within Naturalis. Within the RCO, you work independently for "your" journals.

We Offer
A job in a dynamic and inspiring work environment, within an organization that brings together a diverse group of professionals with a shared passion for nature and biodiversity. We offer a contract between 24-36 hours/week for a period of one year, and a monthly full-time (based on 36 hours) gross salary between €3,111.00 and €3,951.00, depending on relevant experience. You also get an allowance for travel expenses, holiday allowance (8%), and year-end bonus (3.4%). The position is based in Leiden.

The Procedure
Please submit your application — via this form — including a motivation letter and CV, no later than May 18th, 2025. Feel free to contact Maaike van de Kamp-Romijn (maaike.vandekamp-romijn@naturalis.nl) with questions about the position. For procedural questions related to the application, please contact HR (sollicitaties@naturalis.nl).
