Job description

Are you interested in the role of social contacts for inclusion of vulnerable groups? Do you want to contribute to a research project addressing the role of social capital in labour market inclusion of women & migrants in the Netherlands? As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will explore the positive and negative side of social capital and how this affects the inclusion of women and migrants, by analysing newly produced survey data on the Netherlands.

This postdoctoral position is a primary part of the research project ‘Positive and Negative Social Capital and the Labour Market Inclusion of Disadvantaged Groups’. The project investigates how vulnerable groups access, activate and reciprocate different types of support through their social networks, and how these interactions impact labour market outcomes for migrants and women. A key aspect of the research will be distinguishing between access to resources (positive social capital) and request for resources (negative social capital). The project will also explore the role of contacts developed and maintained online versus offline.

The position also provides an opportunity to work with data collected between 2021-2024 in seven surveys among labour migrants in the Netherlands, which are part of the Kenniscentrum Arbeidsmigranten (KCA) panel on labour migrants. This data provides unique insights into the perspective of labour migrants on themes that are relevant to their lives in the Netherlands.

The position involves conducting research for 3 days a week (0.6 FTE) and teaching courses in the Economics and Business Economics programme for 1 day a week (0.2 FTE).

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will (i) contribute to a survey on social capital and labour market inclusion of migrants and women, (ii) conduct statistical analyses on the collected survey data; (iii) take the lead on collective scientific publications on the collected survey data; and (iv) perform teaching activities and thesis supervision.

Requirements

  • You have a PhD degree in a relevant social science area (e.g. sociology or economics) or are able to provide proof that your PhD thesis manuscript has been accepted by the manuscript committee.
  • You have strong expertise in quantitative research methods, particularly in the analysis of survey data.
  • You have working experience with relevant software for quantitative data analysis (preferably Stata).
  • You have experience with or knowledge of social network analysis.
  • You have experience with interdisciplinary collaboration activities related to the theme of labour market inclusion of vulnerable groups (women and migrants).
  • You have a pipeline of thematically relevant publications in high-impact international journals.
  • Your experience with teaching quantitative methods, economics or economic sociology would be a strong asset.
  • You are proficient in English; knowledge of Dutch is an advantage.
  • You can work independently while contributing to collaborative research discussions.
  • You are enthusiastic about engaging with interdisciplinary research networks and presenting your findings at conferences.

Conditions of employment

  • We will give you a temporary employment contract of 36 months.
  • Your salary within salary scale between 10.0 and 10.5 depends on your previous education and number of years of (relevant) work experience. The amounts in the scale are based on a 38-hour working week.
  • You will receive an 8% holiday allowance and an 8,3% end-of-year bonus.
  • We offer Dual Career Coaching. The Dual Career Coaching assists your partner via support, tools, and resources to improve their chances of independently finding employment in the Netherlands.
  • You will receive extra days off. With full-time employment, you can choose between 30 or 41 days of annual leave instead of the statutory 20.

Work and science require good employment practices. This is reflected in Radboud University's primary and secondary employment conditions. You can make arrangements for the best possible work-life balance with flexible working hours, various leave arrangements and working from home. You are also able to compose part of your employment conditions yourself, for example, exchange income for extra leave days and receive a reimbursement for your sports subscription. And of course, we offer a good pension plan. You are given plenty of room and responsibility to develop your talents and realise your ambitions. Therefore, we provide various training and development schemes.

Department

You will be working at the Department of Economics and Business Economics, Nijmegen School of Management (NSM) Radboud University (Nijmegen, Netherlands). Within the department, economic principles are combined with insights from other disciplines (e.g. sociology) to address both traditional and emerging socio-economic challenges, adopting an Economics+ perspective. You will join a dynamic group of researchers examining inequalities created and reproduced by institutions and networks. Through high-quality research, publications and knowledge exchange, we strive to make a meaningful impact both academically and in practice. As a member of our team, you will join a welcoming and collaborative research environment where openness, teamwork and intellectual curiosity are highly valued. We foster an inclusive space for sharing ideas, exploring innovative approaches and supporting professional development.

You will also be part of the Radboud University Network of Migrant Inclusion (RUNOMI), which is a interfaculty network of approximately 100 scholars dedicated to advancing research, education, societal impact and initiatives that promote the inclusion of migrants in society. Within the Nijmegen School of Management (NSM), you will also be part of the GLOCAL Hotspot. GLOCAL brings together scholars analysing central contemporary phenomena with a critical lens that emphasises global-local interactions.
