Two part-time teaching positions The Department of Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam has two part-time teaching positions in Visual Anthropology. We are looking for two experienced teachers who will contribute in the Visual Track of the Master’s Cultural and Social Anthropology. The positions are temporary, partly due to replacement and partly due to the relatively high number of students we expect to graduate with a specialization in visual anthropology.
What are you going to doBoth positions will include supervising five individual MA theses in the Visual Track; this will consist of having regular meetings with the students, providing feedback and guidance in the research design, fieldwork, and thesis production phases, and assessing and co-assessing final theses (consisting of an ethnographic film and an essay).
Besides MA theses’supervision:
- one position will include co-teaching the lectures within the MA course Designing Visual Anthropology from October to December 2026; this will entail (co-) teaching seminars, marking assignments, providing feedback on draft proposals, and entering marks;
- the other one will include marking assignments belonging to the BA course Words, Sounds, Images: The Anthropology of Media, providing feedback on draft proposals, and entering marks.
What do you have to offerCandidates should have:
- a PhD in Anthropology or related Social Science;
- considerable knowledge of current debates and developments in Visual Anthropology;
- teaching experience at university level, specifically in Visual Anthropology;
- ample experience in practicing Visual Anthropology, as demonstrated in a portfolio;
- team spirit and willingness to collaborate in teaching teams;
- ability to teach and supervise in English.
Experience in supervising Master’s theses is a pre. Regional or thematic specialization is open.
What else do we offer youWe offer temporary part-time employment as Teacher (Docent 3) for 6 to 7 hours per week in the period from 1 October 2025 to and including 31 August 2026.
