Job description

Apply for one of two permanent teaching-focused lectureships in English Literature right in the centre of Amsterdam!

We are looking for two enthusiastic and experienced lecturers to teach at both Bachelor's and Master's level as part of our friendly and supportive English Department.
You will teach across our programmes with a particular focus on World Literatures in English, Modern and Contemporary English Literature and Literary Theory.

This is what you will be doing
  • teaching on existing BA and MA courses;
  • supervising bachelors and masters theses;
  • contributing to the improvement of education and identifying areas for enhancement (which may include developing new courses);
  • staying up to date with the professional literature and integrating new research insights in teaching the designated curriculum;
  • participating in committees and working groups and performing administrative duties.

This is what we ask of you
  • a PhD in English Literature
  • versatile in teaching across the BA English Language and Culture and in the MA Literary Studies (especially the English Literature and Culture track);
  • a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If you have not attained a UTQ you are required to start with the UTQ track upon commencement of your employment contract and obtain the qualification within three years of employment;
  • good command of Dutch and English. If you do not speak Dutch, an active and passive command must be acquired within the first two years of employment and the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II must be passed;
  • excellent knowledge of one or more of the following fields: postcolonial or world literatures in English; 20th-21st century English literature (including modernism); literary and cultural theory. This may be demonstrated by publications and/or teaching experience.
  • experience in delivering lectures, leading seminars, and supervising theses;
  • affinity with using ICT in academic education;
  • organizational experience and skills;
  • evidence of being a reliable team player.

This is what else we offer you
  • the opportunity to attain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ);
  • the opportunity to take part in the Dutch as a Second Language programme II;
  • excellent possibilities for further professional development and education;
  • an enthusiastic, inspiring and professional academic team;
  • an inspiring academic and international work environment in the heart of Amsterdam.

This is where you will be working
You will be joining a relatively small team of enthusiastic English Literature and Language scholars from countries currently including the UK, US, Germany, India, South Africa, Australia, Canada, Macedonia, and the Netherlands. We are united by our passion for our subject and the everyday practicalities of running our internationally recognized BA programme alongside several MA ones. The atmosphere in the department is one of friendly collaboration with a fair amount of trust and autonomy. Within English, our specialisms and research interests differ widely, both among our linguists and our literature scholars, which is partly reflected in our membership of different research schools (for more on those, see the UvA structure). We consider this diversity a strength, and have not found it an obstacle in our numerous productive teaching collaborations. For colleagues on the Docent trajectory, there are institutionally supported opportunities for development in teaching leadership and innovation.

Please submit:
1) a cover letter outlining your suitability for the post (two pages max.).
2) a CV incl. relevant publications and the email addresses of two potential referees.
