Job description

Research in the Transport Studies group focuses on interactions between smart mobility and digitalisation, transport infrastructure, land-use and behaviour, and its societal impacts (including equity, safety, climate). We take an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspective on transport, and collaborate with researchers in the Netherlands and abroad from various disciplines (including industrial engineering, human factors, computer science, geography, urban planning, healthcare technology and operations). We conduct ground-breaking research on these issues in different national and international projects. Join our team and strive to broaden our research portfolio!

The challenge
Digitalisation is a main driving force of transport innovation. The design, operation and maintenance of transport systems are now undergoing a digital transformation as a result of huge amounts of information provided by emerging experimentation, testing and monitoring systems. The increased availability of mobility data, real-time traffic data and adoption of digital mobility tools, creates opportunities for improving the modelling, planning and operation of urban mobility, including private transport, public transport, shared mobility services and integrated door-to-door transport systems. For example, shared mobility services offer possibilities to expand and complement existing public transport systems in mobility hubs. Data science technologies, spatial data and geo-visualization techniques open unprecedented opportunities to significantly improve the understanding of travel patterns and management of transport systems. At the same time, there are many research challenges that need to be addressed. How does digitalization relate to sustainable and inclusive transport? How can private, shared and public transport be integrated in mobility hubs? How to combine data and share data across multiple partners involved in developing smart transport systems?

As an Assistant/Associate Professor you will:
  • carry out innovative research and high-impact education.
  • develop ground-breaking research projects in close collaboration with colleagues and the industry.
  • improve your home-based specific expertise and develop an interdisciplinary research line.
  • acquiring external research funding and build our research and teaching ecosystem
  • teach and coordinate courses in our Bachelor programme Civil Engineering and Master track Transport Engineering and Management which is part of the Master programme Civil Engineering and Management
  • supervise students in their graduation assignment
  • contribute towards the supervision of PhD candidate(s).

Requirements

  • You show vision and ambitious drive (seeing opportunities and possibilities, showing ambition);
  • You hold a PhD degree in civil engineering, transport studies or related fields;
  • You have research expertise which comprises quantitative transport modelling (e.g. mobility patterns, transport network modelling), and planning and operations for public transport, rail transport and/or shared mobility;
  • You have a strong interest in operating at the crossroads of different fields;
  • You have a track record in attracting external research funding and are active in networks for acquiring research funding
  • You have ambition and experience in working closely with companies and government agencies;

  • You hold a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) for Dutch Universities, a similar qualification, or are willing to obtain this within 3 years after the start;
  • You possess good communication skills and an excellent command of English;
  • You are able to speak or willing to learn Dutch.

Conditions of employment

  • We offer a fulltime position for one year with the prospect of a permanent position after a positive evaluation;
