Job description

Are you looking for a dynamic job in an academic environment? The Psychological Methods program group at the University of Amsterdam is looking for a junior lecturer to contribute to teaching in the bachelor's and master's programs in the areas of research methods, statistics, polarization, and advanced data science.

Are You Our Next Junior Lecturer in Psychological Methods?
The Psychological Methods group is one of the largest and most successful research and education centres in the field of psychological methods. Its main areas of research are network analysis, complexity science, Bayesian statistics, mathematical psychology, and psychometrics. In addition, the group has a general focus on supporting open science and has made important methodological contributions to facilitate transparent research practices in the past decade. Our educational program consists of bachelor courses in methodology, statistics, and philosophy of science, a premaster and a master in Behavioural Data Science, and a series of courses in the Research Master of the Psychology department. We seek to appoint junior lecturer who can contribute to our educational program in these fields.

What are you going to do
  • Assist senior staff in organizing and delivering courses;
  • Supervise tutorials in areas such as academic writing, polarization, and various topics in quantitative research methods and statistics;
  • Provide constructive feedback to students and assess assignments;
  • Work toward obtaining the University Teaching Qualification (BKO);
  • Contribute to a professional, ethical, and collegial working environment.

What do you have to offer
  • Master’s degree in quantitative psychology, statistics, data science, or a related field;
  • Proven experience with tutoring and student supervision in higher education;
  • Excellent command of R programming;
  • Strong proficiency in spoken and written English (and be willing to learn Dutch);
  • Proven experience with academic writing and publishing;
  • Completion of the Psychology Research Master or the Psychological Methods – Behavioral Data Science program, or a comparable educational program is required.

What else do we offer you
This is a temporary position for four years, with a two-month probationary period, for 0.8 FTE (30,4 hours per week). This is the average number of hours you work per week; there are periods when more hours are required due to grading, among other things. You can compensate these hours later, when the teaching is less intensive.

During the first year of your appointment, 20% of your teaching hours are reserved for training and development. In the years after this will be 10% of your teaching hours.

We refer to this combination of work and professional development as the Lecturer Development Program (DOP). During your four-year contract, you will follow training sessions together with other teachers and obtain the University Teaching Qualification (BKO). The goal of the DOP is to optimize your position in the labor market (employability and opportunities) after the temporary employment.

The gross monthly salary ranges from €3,378 to a maximum of €5,331 gross per month (based on a 38-hour workweek, Dutch Universities scale 10) of the CLA Dutch Universities. The start date is August 18th, 2025.

UvA also offers an attractive package of secondary benefits, including generous vacation days and a thirteenth month. There are also excellent opportunities for further study or personal development.

We also offer:
  • A challenging position with varied responsibilities and plenty of room for personal initiative and development within an inspiring organization
  • A role where your own ideas and input are highly valued
  • An enthusiastic and welcoming team that looks forward to new colleagues
  • An inspiring academic and international working environment in the heart of Amsterdam

You will work in this department
Psychological Methods is a diverse program group conducting research that spans conceptual analysis, technical development, practical implementation, and dissemination of methodological and statistical techniques in psychology. The central aim of the research program is to improve methodological practices in psychology—not only by developing new methods for psychological research, but also by effectively translating results to the broader psychological community and supporting researchers in the appropriate application of methodological techniques. The group consists of 65 researchers and lecturers and is led by Prof. Dr. Han van der Maas and Dr. Dora Matzke. More information can be found here.

If you recognize yourself in this profile and are interested in the role, we look forward to receiving your motivation letter and CV. You can apply via the red button until 11 July 2025. Interviews will take place on 16 and 17 July. In case of equal qualifications, internal candidates will be given preference over external candidates.
