Postdoc in global inverse modeling of atmospheric methane sources and sinks

This project contributes to the EU Horizon Europe project 'Investigating Methane for Climate Action' (IM4CA) that the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam coordinates. The objective of IM4CA is to help answer scientific questions about recent atmospheric trends in the greenhouse gas methane. Improved scientific knowledge is needed to design the most efficient climate mitigation policy. You join the development of the global atmospheric inverse modeling system TM5mp-4DVAR, that is used for the methane reanalysis of the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS). You will use this system to investigate the global sources and sinks of methane and how to make best use of data from high and low resolution methane sensing satellites.

Your duties

• perform global methane inversions
• build in and test the use of new satellite datasets
• present your progress in (sub)consortium meetings and scientific conferences
• supervise thesis projects of Earth & Climate master students
• publish your research in scientific journals

• a PhD in atmospheric research
• experience in atmospheric inverse modeling
• you are eager to help solve the global methane puzzle
• a strong interest in working in an international research consortium
• excellent academic writing skills and a strong publication record
• fluency in English

• a salary of minimum € 3.546,00 (Scale 10) and maximum € 5.538,00 (Scale 10) gross per month, on a full-time basis. This is based on UFO profile Researcher 4. The exact salary depends on your education and experience.
• a position for at least 0.8 FTE. Your employment contract will initially last 2 year. Afterwards, the possibility of expansion exists.

About the Atmospheric Research group of the Earth Sciences department
Our research group is a nice team of PhD students, postdocs, and academic staff working on greenhouse gases, supporting reactive gases, and aerosols. We develop atmospheric models operating at scales ranging from local, regional to global.
