Job description

The position

The Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD) is seeking to fill the position of postdoctoral research fellow with experience and strong interest in the area of non-communicable diseases (NCD) in Africa. The postdoctoral research fellow will work with the Joep Lange Chair holder Catherine Kyobutungi to establish a research program on chronic disease management as a concept in primary health care to strengthen the responsiveness of the health system to the management of both infectious and non-infectious diseases in low and middle income countries (LMICs). This will entail conducting research in various aspects of chronic disease management.

The Joep Lange Chair & Fellows Program

The Joep Lange Chair & Fellows Program was established in 2015 in memory of HIV activist, doctor and scientist Prof. Joep Lange. The Chair and Fellows program brings together the brightest minds from all over the world in the field of global health. In partnership with global top academic institutes, they focus on building the knowledge base of global health working together with organizations who can apply these insights to improve access to quality healthcare across the globe. The goal of the program is to promote collaborative research, and teaching interactions in global health in its broadest definition.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Contribute to research project development in the program, including grant applications.
  • Conduct systematic literature reviews.
  • Oversee data collection, data cleaning, and data analysis in the execution of research project(s) within the program.  
  • Lead and contribute to scientific paper writing.
  • Lead and participate in dissemination of research findings and policy dialogue with relevant audiences, including lay public.

Requirements

Essential

  • PhD or equivalent in Public Health/Epidemiology or closely related field.
  • Strong writing skills and good record of publications on relevant areas in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Experience and strong interest in the area of NCDs
  • Proven experience in conducting health facility surveys and systematic reviews
  • Strong quantitative skills (managing, analysing and interpreting data), with extensive familiarity with quantitative statistical packages (e.g. STATA, SAS or SPSS, R);
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft packages (e.g. MS Word, MS PowerPoint and MS Excel).

Desirable

  • Expertise in management of NCDs or familiarity with chronic care models.
  • Experience and familiarity with a diverse set of health and social science data sets.
  • Expertise in qualitative methods, including familiarity with qualitative analysis software packages (e.g. NVivo).
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work in a culturally diverse team.
  • Experience in developing proposals and attracting research grants.

Conditions of employment

What we offer

The fellowship position is for an initial period of two years with a possibility of renewal depending on performance and availability of additional funding. The postdoctoral research fellow will work closely with AIGHD and APHRC and travel between Amsterdam and Nairobi. Time to be spent at each location will be determined by activities, according to needs, in mutual agreement.
