Job description

This Assistant Professor position (0.7 FTE teaching and 0.3 FTE research) is attached to the subject area Religious Studies within the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Faculty of Humanities at Utrecht University. The subject area Religious Studies offers a dynamic, research-oriented context with a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and curriculum development. Research and teaching in Religious Studies at UU is carried out in collaboration with the subject area Islam and Arabic, as well as with other programmes within the Faculty of Humanities and beyond.

Requirements

We are looking for a colleague with:
  • a PhD in Religious Studies, or in the broader spectrum of social-cultural research on religion in modern societies;
  • demonstrable competence with regard to religion in modern history, archival research and historical-comparative methods;
  • demonstrable expertise with regard to the study of religion in plural environments;
  • an international publication track-record commensurable with the number of years of professional experience since the PhD;
  • demonstrable record of excellence in teaching at BA and MA level in the form of a Basic Qualification of Teaching (Basiskwalificatie onderwijs (BKO)) or equivalent, or the willingness to acquire it (within two years after the initial appointment);
  • demonstrable participation in international networks, experience with organizing workshops and /or the preparation of research grant applications. 

As Assistant Professor in Religious Studies, you will be responsible for:

  • teaching in Dutch and English at all levels of the BA and MA Religious Studies (foreign candidates are expected to be able to teach in Dutch within 2 years);
  • research activities, such as publications in international journals and book series, organizing workshops, writing research grant applications;
  • active participation in departmental activities;
  • coordinating functions in relation to teaching and/or research;
  • contributing to the subject area’s joint effort to disseminate its expertise to the public.

Conditions of employment

We offer a temporary position (1.0 FTE), starting 1 September 2019. The position is temporary for two years, and can become permanent after a positive evaluation after a period of two years, by which time the candidate is expected to be able to teach in Dutch and will have obtained the BKO.

Depending on qualifications and experience of the candidate, the starting gross monthly salary for a full-time employment will range between €3,637 and €5,656 (scale 11/12 Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities). If not yet all qualifications have been obtained, the starting gross monthly salary for a full-time employment will range between €2,709 and €4,274 (scale 10 Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities). Utrecht University offers a pension scheme, a holiday allowance of 8% per year, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and flexible employment conditions.
