Job description

Our protein interactomics projects rely upon immunoprecipitation and quantitative mass spectrometry. We are looking for a driven, passionate, enthusiastic researcher to join our team and aid the advancement of our mass spectrometry-based interactome studies. The successful candidate will initially contribute to mature, ongoing projects, and then participate in establishing entirely new work. Our published research can be viewed at www.macromolecule.fun (e.g. some relevant PMIDs: 31892958, 29309035, 25938370).

We are moving towards integrated proteogenomic studies in patient tissues as well as crosslinking / mass spectrometry for structural proteomics (in conjunction with electron microscopy and computational modelling). We have a strong biological focus on LINE-1 retrotransposon contributions to the biology of cancer and ageing but also pursue other diverse topics in cell and molecular biology. We have a new Orbitrap Exploris 480 mass spectrometer dedicated to the requirements of our research and we have access to extensive additional infrastructure available at the UMCG Interfaculty Mass Spectrometry Center (http://mscenter.webhosting.rug.nl). Prior experience in quantitative protein mass spectrometry is an absolute requirement for this position (see below). We have dedicated bioinformatics staff to support data analysis. This position also includes the possibility of short stays conducting research at The Rockefeller University in New York City.

Requirements

The Post-doc will be part of a highly motivated and enthusiastic research group and should meet the following requirements:
- Required education/skills: PhD in Molecular/Medical Biology, Analytical Chemistry, or related-field.
- Expertise in high performance LC-MS/MS for shotgun proteomics required.
- Applicants with prior post-doctoral experience are encouraged.
- Candidates that also possess experience with crosslinking/MS, proximity labelling, and/or DIA, will receive advantaged consideration (please mention in cover letter).
- Should be highly organized and motivated to take on project leadership responsibilities.
- Collaborative, communication, and networking skills are mandatory.
- Good knowledge of English.

The UMCG has a preventive Hepatitis B policy. The UMCG can provide you with the vaccination, should it be required for your position.

In case of specific professions a ‘Certificate of Good Conduct’ is required.

Conditions of employment

Your salary will be a maximum of € 4.481,- gross per month (scale 10), depending on your qualifications and relevant experience, based on a full-time appointment.
In addition, the UMCG will offer you 8% holiday pay and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.

Employment basis: temporary for specified period. The duration of the initial contract will be two years with the possibility of extension for an additional two years, contingent upon performance and available funding.

Department

European Research Institute for the Biology of Ageing (ERIBA)

An opening is available in the Macromolecules and Interactomes group, headed by Dr. John LaCava. The ERIBA is a newly established institute at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). The central theme at the ERIBA is the molecular mechanism of (cellular) ageing. We aim to identify physiological and molecular changes that can explain the loss of cells and functional decline of cells and tissues with age. For this, we make use of state-of-the-art technology and a variety of model organisms. Furthermore, we heavily invest in Systems Biology to integrate our findings within the scope of various models and mechanisms of ageing that have been proposed. The ERIBA is housed in a brand-new building and part of the central UMCG campus in central Groningen, a small (200,000 inhabitants) but vibrant city (with over 30,000 students) in the north of the Netherlands.
