Job description

The UvA’s Faculty of Science is launching a major recruitment campaign called ‘Connecting Science’ in the areas of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Computer Science. Our ambition is to attract top talent from all over the world to a large number of newly created faculty positions in a wide range of exciting scientific directions. We offer a stimulating environment and excellent conditions for research, tightly connected to challenging educational programmes.

We are looking for ambitious and motivated scientists to connect different scientific disciplines. Our goal is to have a maximal impact on science and society.

What are you going to do?

Organizations increasingly find the need to share data to accomplish common goals no single organization can achieve on its own. However, in absence of trust, organizations are reluctant to share data and want to be ensured that data is only used for the purpose for which it is shared but not for other purposes. Examples for such use cases can be found in science (life sciences), industry (predictive maintenance, health), and society (smart city, decision support on crowd management) projects.

Separating data networks from development platforms via a Data Exchange (DX) enables data owners and algorithm developers to dynamically create contracts arranging conditions and establishment of the value that can be traded. As a particular way to organize data exchange for AI development, we introduced the concept of a Digital Data Marketplace (DDM). A DDM enables an ecosystems of sovereign organization to implement data exchanges based on community rules and members creating agreements that can be enforced and audited as a means to reduce risk, allowing trust to emerge. In this position you will work in close collaboration with several initiatives and (funded) projects stimulating the development of data exchange facilities.

The Faculty of Science has a student body of around 6,500, as well as 1,600 members of staff working in education, research or support services. Researchers and students at the Faculty of Science are fascinated by every aspect of how the world works, be it elementary particles, the birth of the universe or the functioning of the brain.

About the Informatics Institute

The mission of the Informatics Institute is to perform curiosity-driven and use-inspired fundamental research in Computer Science. The main research themes are Artificial Intelligence, Computational Science and Systems and Network Engineering. Our research involves complex information systems at large, with a focus on collaborative, data driven, computational and intelligent systems, all with a strong interactive component.

The System and Network Engingeering lab, one of the three largest research labs at the Informatics Institute, conducts research on leading-edge computer systems of all scales, ranging from global-scale systems and networks to embedded devices. Across these multiple scales our particular interest is on extra-functional properties of computer systems, such as performance, energy consumption, reliability, programmability, productivity, trustability, and security. We investigate applicability in ICT of fundamental new technology such as Quantum Computing and Networking.
