Job description

We are looking for an assistant professor or associate professor in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, to strengthen the chair group Organic Chemistry in the cluster Biomolecular Sciences of the Department of Agrotechnology and Food Sciences at Wageningen University. The position includes both research and teaching responsibilities.

In a challenging career trajectory you will be responsible for developing a strong research group that initiates and implements new research in synthesis of (bio-)organic compounds, with relevance to the field of synthetic biointerfaces. For example, the search for biologically active nanostructures and artificial cells is dependent on the availability of tailor-made organic functionalities that can be attached or incorporated at will. To this aim novel, complex (bio-)organic moieties need to be synthesized, frequently along unexplored routes. Such syntheses need to be efficient to obtain the desired molecules in sufficient amounts for subsequent embedding in or on nanostructures/artificial cells, or for biological testing. We expect you to set up your own synthetic organic chemistry-based research line, that should be complementary to the existing research areas within our laboratory.
You are expected to actively seek funding for new research projects via national and international grant opportunities. Other specific tasks include supervising the research of PhD candidates, postdocs, technical staff and thesis students, writing scientific publications, and presenting research results at international conferences. Guidance of graduate and undergraduate students and teaching analytical and organic chemistry at all levels of the curriculum (lectures, lab sessions, course development and course responsibility) are an essential part of the job. Training courses and coaching are provided for the new Assistant or Associate Professor to enhance teaching and other skills.

Employer

Wageningen University & Research

The Organic Chemistry group (www.orc.wur.nl) constitutes a large, multidisciplinary team involved in research and teaching in organic and analytical chemistry. Our research centers around the organic chemistry of bioactive surfaces and materials, which can be defined as: Study and development of organic reactions and reactivity of (bio-)organic molecules and structures at or relevant for surfaces.

Themes are:
  • Surface-bound analytical chemistry
  • Synthesis of bioactive molecules
  • Interactive surfaces and materials
A recent external international evaluation of our research gave us the maximum score of 3 x 1 for quality, relevance and viability. The laboratory is well-equipped with a unique set of analytical instruments for bio-organic materials and surfaces, including NMR, AFM, XRD, XPS, QCM, scanning Auger, SEM, FTIR, SPR, UV, time-resolved absorption and fluorescence, mass spectrometers, etc. with the corresponding technical staff. In addition to this, the embedding within Wageningen University and Research Centre adds ample biological input into our focus on surface chemistry-based research.
The Organic Chemistry group plays an important role in the teaching of many students at Wageningen University, mainly first-year students, but also second year and MSc students. Topics include introductory and advanced organic chemistry, analytical chemistry and spectroscopy, polymer chemistry, organic synthesis and reaction mechanisms, etc.
The mission of our University is to explore the potential of nature to improve the quality of life. Within Wageningen University & Research, nine specialized research institutes from the Wageningen Research Foundation and Wageningen University have joined forces to help answer the most important questions in the domain of healthy food and living environment. With approximately 30 locations, 5,000 employees, and 10,000 students, it is one of the leading organizations in its domain worldwide.
