The Chair group of Strategic Management at the Nijmegen School of Management invites applications for a PhD position. The position is part of the Centre for Responsible Organisation Competencies and Sustainability, will be supervised by Prof. Hans van Kranenburg and Dr. Sjors Witjes and is funded by Radboud Services. Gerard van Assem and Lysbeth Santema will be the supervisors from the Radboud Services organisation.
This transdisciplinary participatory action research project takes the reorganisation of Radboud Services as a case study to investigate under which conditions reflection between academics and non-academics contributes to the successful implementation of strategic decisions on organisational change. Reflection, as part of transdisciplinary research, is the process that critically examines the epistemological principles and normative assumptions underlying the scientific theories and methods used as well as the status and role of scientific knowledge amidst other values and forms of knowing. Few studies exist on the operationalisation of reflection within research on organisational change. While aiming for meaningful outcomes for the organisational change assignment of the case study organisation and for a contribution to related theories on organisational change in public organisations, this PhD project consists of a literature study and data gathering while taking an active part in the organisational change process of the Radboud Services organisation.
Your task will be to collect data, conduct research, write scientific articles, and complete a PhD thesis in time. You will also participate in conferences, workshops and other scholarly and valorisation activities.

The Nijmegen School of Management (NSM) is an academic center of research and higher education, focusing on institutional and managerial issues within complex organisations. There are seven disciplines within NSM: Business Administration, Public Administration, Political Science, Economics and Business Economics, Social and Political Sciences of the Environment, Human Geography, and Spatial Planning. The faculty has four departments: Business Administration, Economics, Public Administration and Political Science, and Geography, Planning and Environment.
NSM strives for a multidisciplinary approach. Its educational programme is characterised by small-scale teaching and provides a stimulating learning environment with an emphasis on the development of academic skills. NSM employs 260 FTEs, 75% of whom are academics. Currently, NSM has approximately 4,500 students.
The Department of Business Administration consists of five chairs: Strategic Management, Organisational Design and Development, Marketing, Methods, and Strategic Human Resource Management. The Department of Business Administration is responsible for the BSc programme in Business Administration (including a full track in English, and a track in International Business Administration) as well as eight specialisations within the MSc programme in Business Administration (all in English).
Our interdisciplinary Responsible Organisation research programme addresses the multiple values underlying organisational responsibility, the conditions required to realize those values and the interventions geared to the transition of organisations towards responsible organisations. We co-create knowledge with multiple stakeholders in the wider community to ensure the impact of our scholarly work. Our research activities fall under the responsibility of the interdisciplinary Institute for Management Research (IMR).
The Strategic Management group focuses on strategy processes in relation to the dynamic and complex environment that organisations are confronted with and the competencies and skills required to deal with the diversity and plurality of stakeholders to create multiple values for an organisation and its surroundings. Members of the Strategic Management department have published in high-impact journals such as the Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Global Strategy Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, Long Range Planning, Journal of Law and Economics, Organization Studies, and Research Policy.
