Consider a coastal mega-city with millions of inhabitants in the midst of a threat such as a climate disaster (hurricane, earthquake or flooding) or conflict (organized paramilitary troops, terrorist threats, conventional threats). The army needs to organize a sea-to-land operation to protect such a territory, where marines are landed on the shore of such contested or degraded environment to provide stability and/or humanitarian aid.

The aim of this project is to provide determine decisions in such a situation in an optimal way. This will be done by developing operations research techniques for solving this problem in a real-time setting, taking into account changes in the situation represented by the data. The PhD candidate will collaborate here with experts from TNO and The Netherlands Defence Academy.

A PhD position at Erasmus School of Economics (ESE). This project is a joint project of the Erasmus University Rotterdam, TNO in the Hague and Netherlands Defence Academy in Den Helder. The project is affiliated with one of ESE’s graduate schools: ERIM. ESE has a long tradition of academic and applied research, and is a leading academic institution, hosting some of the world’s foremost economists in all major areas of economics and business economics.

Requirements

Due to the project’s defense-related character, only applicants with the Dutch nationality are considered. Moreover, a security screening is part of the hiring process.

Potential PhD candidates are expected to have:

  • A (Research) Master’s degree in a discipline relevant to the PhD project
  • Excellent study results
  • Strong and explicit interest and motivation for scientific research
  • Excellent command of English (minimum CEFR C1)
  • Candidates are selected on the basis of their CVs, academic references, and interview(s) with potential supervisors

Furthermore, candidates are required to be admissible to ERIM (ERIM admission requirements) (depending on the specific project).

The preferred starting date of PhD appointment is September 1, 2020

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: Temporary, 4 or 5 years. The candidate's performance is evaluated after 18 months and after a sufficiently satisfactory assessment, the contract is extended for the remainder of the project.

Our PhD projects are fully funded salaried positions with a duration of 4 or 5 years (depending on pre-education), meaning that appointed PhD candidates are employees of the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU). The salary for a PhD-employee (promovendus) starts at € 2,325 gross per month in the first year, increasing up to € 2,972 in the last year. In addition, the EUR pays an 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%, along with 29 paid leave days in case of full-time employment.
