We are looking for a full-time postdoc in the field of Human-Computer Interaction with a strong affinity with design research on playfulness. The position is available in the Systemic Change group, Industrial Design Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Netherlands.

Job description

It is a 2-year position intended to start February  1st 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

As a post-doc you will work within a team of researchers / designers / graduate students on literature studies related to playful characteristics and design, and on design, prototyping and field-evaluation of interactive systems that incorporate playful characteristic to motivate user groups in various domains such as formal / informal learning, and health and wellbeing.

The post-doc work will be closely linked to the work in several ongoing projects, such as the development of playful learning environments, and the European project COMnPLAY that examines the role of fun in informal and formal science learning.

The aim of this position is to conduct research on the role of playful properties in the design of interactive products and systems, e.g. through literature studies and design research. Another aim is to write consolidation papers related to several of our ongoing projects in this area and to help setting up and managing our stakeholder network.

Candidates are expected to have advanced skills in 'designing with playful properties', interaction design and design research, and we expect a relevant publication record and convincing portfolio of work.

The Postdoc will work on:
  • Conducting literature studies to further develop the playful properties framework
  • Conceptualizing, designing and prototyping interactive systems that incorporate playful properties
  • Conducting (qualitative) field-research in the domain of informal/ formal learning and/or healthy lifestyles
  • Supervising relevant student projects
  • Publishing in high-standard international journals and conferences in the field of HCI
  • Building and maintaining relevant professional networks
  • Setting up project proposals and applying for funding for future research

Requirements

We are looking for candidates who have
  • Completed (or are about to complete) a PhD in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, Play and Games, Educational Technologies, or a closely related topic
  • Experience with conducting literature studies.
  • Experience in bridging between theory and design.
  • Experience with interaction design research and (preferably) prototyping of interactive systems
  • Experience in designing, planning and conducting (qualitative) research and field-evaluations of interactive systems
  • Experience working with diverse target groups, preferably in the domain of the home, education and/or informal learning settings
  • Publication experience in high-quality HCI conferences/journals
  • Experience with working in multidisciplinary teams
  • Good communication skills: fluency in English in mandatory, speaking Dutch is preferable.
  • (Preferably) experience in applying for funding
  • (Preferably) experience in supervising students

Conditions of employment

We are offering:
  • A full-time temporary appointment for a period of 2 years
  • A gross monthly salary between € 2.972 and € 4.274 (on a full-time basis), depending on experience and knowledge;
  • A yearly holiday allowance of 8% of the yearly salary;
  • A yearly end-of-year allowance of 8.3% of the yearly salary;
  • A broad package of fringe benefits (including an excellent technical infrastructure, moving expenses, savings schemes, and excellent sports facilities, parental and maternity leave).
