Job description

A hardworking lecturer to teach in a range of different courses offered by the water systems and global change group. You are a recent graduate (MSc) in Environmental Sciences, Hydrology, Physical Geography, Climate Sciences, International Land and Water Management or a similar field. You are interested in teaching at the University and have the ambition to do a PhD within the our group.

We contribute to three MSc Programmes: International Land and Water Management, Climate Studies and Environmental Sciences. Within these programmes we offer numerous MSc courses related to impacts on water resources and climate change impacts and adaptations. In addition, we teach several BSc minors courses. As the number of students in our group is rapidly growing, we have room for a recent MSc graduate who will support us in our teaching programme.

Your main tasks will be to teach during the different master and BSc minor courses, supervising student groups within different courses, assist with supervisions of BSc or MSc thesis students and coordinate our thesis ring. In addition, you will have the opportunity to write a PhD proposal The appointment will be for initially one year, during this year you will work on your PhD research proposal under supervision of a senior staff member. If the proposal is funded you will be encouraged to stay at the group for the length of the PhD project.

Requirements

  • Recent MSc in Environmental Sciences, Physical or Social Geography, Climate Sciences, International Land and Water Management or related field
  • Affinity with the research and teaching of the Water systems and global change group
  • Interest in teaching and preferable some teaching experience
  • Willingness and ability to develop a PhD research proposal
  • Excellent English communication skills

Conditions of employment

A challenging position with, depending on your experience, a competitive salary from a minimum of € 2709,- to a maximum of € 4274,- for a full working week of 38 hours in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities (scale 10).

In our research, we analyse and assess the impacts of climate change and population growth and propose and test adaptation strategies. We use simulation models, earth system observations, scenario analysis and field studies. We actively invite students from different backgrounds, and skills and interests to take part in our courses and research. Also our staff comes from a diversity of backgrounds. Currently our group has 12 staff members, 7 post-docs and more than 30 PhD students. The group has as an excellent funding base with lots of external grants and projects from a broad range of funding organisations.

Research of the group has a strong international focus, with projects at global scale as well as a strong focus on Africa and Asia.

Our teaching focusses on contribution to three different Master Programmes: International Land and Water Management, Climate Studies and Environmental Sciences. Within these programmes we offer numerous Master courses related to global change impacts on water resources and climate change impacts and adaptation. In addition, a number of BSc minor courses are offered. A growing number of students is interested in the work of our group and last year we had about 70 MSc students doing their Master thesis at our group.
