Job description

The Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) in Amsterdam is a Comprehensive Cancer Center combining a hospital and research laboratories in a single independent organization. Statisticians within the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics concentrate on methodological and statistical research and provide statistical expertise to clinicians and other investigators on diverse topics from all areas of biomedical cancer research. A position is available for a fulltime biostatistician. The successful candidate is expected to provide state-of-the-art statistical expertise to researchers and doctors in the research institute and the hospital as a knowledgeable and proactive statistical collaborator and/or consultant.

He/she will work in close collaboration with two other statisticians, of whom one supervises the Statistics group. The position involves applying (or developing) statistical approaches to cover a wide range of topics including the design and analysis of observational studies, the identification of prognostic and predictive biomarkers, sample size calculations, risk prediction, as well as small sample statistics for animal and in vitro experiments. Statistical support also involves co-teaching an annual course in basic biostatistics.

Requirements

We are looking for an enthusiastic, hands-on and proactive statistician with excellent English communication skills, who has the ability to facilitate and perform high quality science. We require experience as the primary statistician responsible for analysis and reporting on several large clinical and/or epidemiological studies, also including study design and grant application.

Requirements

  • A Master or PhD degree in (bio)statistics, mathematics, or physics, or equivalent qualifications;
  • Knowledge of statistical theory and methods;
  • Advanced command of statistical packages (preferably R, but others such as SAS or STATA, and a desire to work in R, are also acceptable);
  • Knowledge of the basic approaches used in clinical research and epidemiology;
  • Knowledge of the Dutch language or willingness to learn Dutch is preferred.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year, with the possibility of permanent appointment.

You will join a dynamic international research group. You will collaborate with scientists and clinicians with expertise in different disciplines. You will have the opportunity to follow high-quality courses.Your temporary employment will be for a period of 1 year with the possibility of a subsequent permanent appointment. The gross, full-time salary per month will range from €2.336 to €4.466 euros according to the FWG-function group 50-60, and depends on previous experience.

Furthermore, you will receive 8,33% vacation money and 8,33% end of year bonus. The terms of employment will be in accordance with the CAO Ziekenhuizen (Collective Labour Agreement for Hospitals). Amsterdam is a very livable city with many cultural amenities. The institute is located within a 20 minute tram or bicycle ride from the center of Amsterdam and within 20 minutes from Schiphol airport by car, bus or bicycle.
