We are looking for an emerging scholar in the field of adaptive water management. You have a PhD degree, and you are trained in water science using a combination of natural, social and governance sciences focusing on socio-ecological system analysis in combination with field experience.

You will contribute to the research line "Adaptive Planning and Design" of the Water Systems and Global Change group (WSG) at Wageningen University & Research. In this research line, we analyze, assess and design strategies and plans for water systems at multiple scales, to cope with impacts of global change. Our current research covers dynamics in long term planning (e.g. adaptation turning points, adaptation pathways), innovations in coastal management (e.g. nature-based, multifunctional flood defenses), monitoring and analysis of real-life experiments (e.g. climate proofing of catchments) and development of hydro-meteorological information services.

As our new colleague you will strengthen the expertise of our team. Your focus will be on (adaptive) water management, particularly in an international context. In your research and teaching you will use and add to the approaches currently used at WSG. You will take a multi-disciplinary approach actively seeking collaboration with scientists from other fields both within our group as well as other groups within the WUR and other international institutions. Your work will link and build via the two cross cutting themes of our research group on Water and Climate Information Systems and Water Stress.

Furthermore, you will develop, supervise and carry out high-quality research in collaboration with your own international network, as well as with colleagues at our University. You will also be dedicated to acquire funding from a mix of government, EU and private sources and publish regularly in leading international academic journals. And colleagues will support you to develop an individual research grant application to either the Dutch Innovational Research Incentives Scheme (VENI-VIDI-VICI) and/or the European Research Council.

Besides research, teaching is an important task of tenure track professors. You will have an important role in the strongly internationally oriented teaching programs. In the short term, you will be expected to supervise MSc and PhD students in the field of adaptive water management. Moreover, you will contribute to existing courses taught by the Water Systems and Global Change Group in the Masters of International Land and Water Management. Over the long term, opportunities will emerge to develop your own courses and co-design MSc and BSc programs at the University.

The successful candidate will proceed through the tenure track system at Wageningen University. Within a period of 12 years after being appointed as Assistant Professor, you are expected to reach the level of Professor in your own field. You will therefore establish an internationally visible independent research line and identify where your research makes a societal impact.

• A PhD degree in (adaptive) water management, adaptive planning and design, climate & water information services, or a related field
• Experience in combining natural sciences, social sciences and water governance
• Interest in the relation between water systems and global change in an international context
• Experience and affinity with delivering high quality education at BSc and/or MSc levels, including supervising BSc and MSc students.
• Experience in acquiring and leading internationally oriented research projects
• Ability and preferably some experience with participatory research
• An emerging publishing record in peer reviewed international academic literature.
• A standout colleague willing to contribute to the wider interests of the team and the university.
• Excellent English communication and writing skills

We offer a challenging position. Evaluation on job performance is every 3/4 years, and a positive outcome will lead to a permanent position after 7 years. Depending on your experience, a competitive salary from a minimum of € 3637,- to a maximum of € 4978,- (assistant professor position) and from € 5039,- to a maximum of € 6133,- (associate professor position) for a full working week of 38 hours in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities (scale 11 and scale 13).

Successful evaluation will allow growing towards a Professor holding a Personal Chair. This includes the chance to define your own research line and research group. The Water Systems and Global Change (WSG) group is a solution oriented multidisciplinary research group where staff and students can develop new skills and excel in their science. In our research, we analyze and assess the impacts of climate change and population growth on water systems and propose and test adaptation strategies. We use simulation models, earth system observations, scenario analysis and field studies. We actively invite students from different backgrounds, and skills and interests to take part in our courses and research. Also our staff comes from very different backgrounds. Currently our group has 15 staff members, 7 post-docs and more than 30 PhD students. The group currently has as an excellent funding base with lots of external grants and projects from a broad range of funding organizations. Research of the group has a strong international focus, with projects at global scale as well as a strong focus on Africa and Asia.

Our teaching focusses on contribution to three different Master Programs: International Land and Water Management, Climate Studies and Environmental Sciences. Within these programs we offer a range of Master courses related to Global change impacts on water resources and climate change impacts and adaptations. In addition we teach in a number of BSc minor courses. A growing number of students is interested in the work of our group and last year we had about 70 MSc students doing their Master thesis at our group.
