We are the Department of Data Science and Knowledge Engineering (DKE) at Maastricht University, the Netherlands: an international community of ~50 researchers at various stages of their career, embedded in the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE). Our department has nearly 30 years’ experience with research and teaching in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science and Applied Mathematics. To strengthen our team, we are looking for an associate professor who will work on Data Fusion and Integration.

Associate Professor in Data Fusion and Integration
The focus of this position is on generating high-quality added value from data by developing methods and techniques for: (1) integrating a multitude of different data sources, (2) bringing together widely heterogeneous data sources, and (3) analyzing data with complex and non-standard structures. In current application domains in science and society, there is a strong incentive to develop such methods. This holds for applications ranging from AI techniques in robotics (e.g. self-driving cars, cooperative autonomous agents) to modern medicine (e.g. personalized medicine) and physics (e.g. the combination of noisy data from different devices and detectors, to facilitate detection of events from weak signals).

At Maastricht University, associate professors will have the ius promovendi as of January 1, 2020. This means you can independently act as supervisor of PhD students. In addition to your research, you will contribute to top-rated education in our department. We offer one bachelor’s programme and two master’s programmes, all of which are nationally ranked #1 in their category and involve a mix of Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science and Applied Mathematics.

Embedding
This position builds on, and benefits from, foundational expertise at DKE. Our research centers around nine established themes and labs, which includes themes such as Signals, Complex Systems and Images and Machine Learning, as well as the Affective and Visual Computing Lab and the Laboratory for Cognitive Robotics and Complex Self-Organizing Systems. Researchers typically work on multiple themes at the same time to ensure knowledge transfer across (sub)disciplines. Outside of the department, we offer an extensive, worldwide network of collaborators in the public and private sector, as well as a firm rooting in national and international AI networks. Facilities include access to a supercomputer cluster and robotics equipment.

The joint appointment program creates an extra opportunity for the candidate to work for part of their time directly for a company. Our ideal candidate has:

·         A PhD degree in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering or a strongly related field;

·         A track record in research and teaching;

·         A proven track record in funding acquisition at the national and/or European level;

·         Profound experience with guiding PhD students, as you will be able to independently act as a PhD supervisor in this position;

·         English language fluency.

We offer a full-time, tenure-track position starting as soon as possible. You will initially be employed on a temporary contract as an associate professor (level 2). Together, we will put together a development plan with specific goals to meet. Five years into your appointment, we will evaluate those goals and promote you to associate professor (level 1) on a permanent contract if the goals have been met. The evaluation can be brought forward if the goals are met earlier, or deferred at your request in case of personal circumstances such as pregnancy leave, parental leave or chronic illness.

The salary is stipulated in the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities: a minimum of € 5.039 and a maximum of € 6.738 per month (scale 13/14), depending on experience, for a full-time position of 38 hours a week. On top of this, there is an annual holiday allowance (8% of annual income) and an annual end-of-year bonus (8.3% of annual income).

Furthermore, applicants from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for the so-called 30% ruling, a tax cut for highly skilled migrants that applies for a maximum of five years.
