Job description

This chair is embedded in the section Interdisciplinary Social Science of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Utrecht University. As a chair holder you use a theory-driven approach to generate interdisciplinary social science knowledge that addresses urgent societal issues. You are an academic with a strong international reputation. You are dedicated to delivering high quality research and education together with the team, helping junior faculty develop their independent careers and stimulate an inclusive environment.

Teaching
As a chair holder you have an important responsibility in teaching and student supervision, and contribute to the curriculum development in undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programmes. Teaching activities concern the Bachelor's Programme Interdisciplinary Social Science; the Academic Master's Programmes Social Policy and Public Health and Youth Studies; the Research Master's Programme Migration, Ethnic Relations and Multiculturalism; and the PhD Programme within the Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS). You initiate and oversee curriculum development and innovation.


Research
In the area of research you generate and disseminate interdisciplinary social science knowledge and promote its societal application. You bring relevant expertise that may pertain to understanding the implications of cultural diversity and promoting positive relations between ethnic, religious and national groups. The application of this expertise may cover educational, organizational and policy settings in local, regional and (inter)national contexts. Your expertise matches with and complements the section’s existing areas of expertise, which include research and evidence-based practice in youth studies and in public health.

Leadership
You are a team builder who also invests in supporting the careers of scientific staff in the chair. Furthermore, you actively take on managerial and administrative responsibility within the section, department, or faculty.

Requirements

In accordance with current practice in the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences, 60% of the appointment involves teaching and 40% involves research. Ideally your eligibility is exemplified by:

Teaching

  • enthusiasm and experience in teaching and student supervision;
  • extensive experience with curriculum development and innovation, and educational management;
  • active and shown commitment to internationalization and teaching international students.


Research

  • outstanding research achievement demonstrated by sustained high quality publications, both as first and senior author, that have innovated the field;
  • proven societal impact of research, demonstrated by knowledge dissemination to and/or implementation by societal stakeholders;
  • proven ability to obtain external research funding;
  • broad network of international collaborators, participation in international research consortia, and/or international research management roles.

Leadership
  • highly motivated to help junior colleagues develop their independent careers (e.g. in research and teaching);
  • team orientation: positive, interdependent attitude and proven ability to forge connection with coworkers;
  • active societal role by collaborating with societal partners, participating in professional organizations, or initiating societal debate;
  • experience and willingness to take on managerial roles within the section, department or faculty.

Conditions of employment

We offer a full-time position (1.0 FTE). The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience  - ranges between €5,582 and €9,812 (scale H2-H1 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model). Applicants from abroad moving to the Netherlands may be eligible for a special expense allowance scheme: the 30% facility. The Tax and Customs Administration decides whether employees meet the necessary conditions.
