Job description

The department of Communication Science has a mission to empower humans and organizations in our high-tech digital society. Scholars in the department focus on research and education that connects people through technology and people with technology in order to bring forth a resilient, sustainable and inclusive society. We are currently looking to strengthen our educational and research track labeled ‘digital society’. Are you a scholar who wants to play to the strengths of all kinds of emerging technologies that transform the ways in which people behave and interact? Do you have a track record (preferable in your PhD) in studying technological developments and thought about interventions and policy directions to guide these developments? Are you interested in the communicative implications of new technologies such as the IoT, machine learning, 3D printing, social robots, deep fakes, on, for example, society, social processes and infrastructures, inequalities, security, privacy? Then, you might consider applying for becoming part of our top ranked educational program: the number 1 communication program in the 2020 Keuzegids Universiteiten study guide. We are the only communication science group that really studies and teaches communication in the context of our high-tech digital global society.

Your challenge

You will be teaching (0.7 fte) in the bachelor’s and master’s programmes of Communication Science. For instance, in the bachelor’s programme you will contribute to modules in the ‘digital society’ track; in the master’s programme you will teach a course closely related to your research expertise. All teaching will be in English. We encourage you to develop a productive and viable research line and play an active role in the acquisition of research funding (0.3 fte).

Requirements

You have a PhD in a field related to our digital society (e.g., communication science, psychology, sociology). You have strong affinity with technological innovations and their implications for society. Your research interest covers areas such as social media, the Internet of Things, big data. You are an excellent teacher. You have a good track record in research, reflected in high-quality publications. Experience in the acquisition of funding is a pre. We expect that you will be able to set up and maintain a network within the academic world and with relevant external stakeholders such as companies and tech developers. You have a (near-)native mastery of the English language. Candidates are required to obtain University Teaching Qualification (UTQ).

Conditions of employment

You are appointed as an Assistant Professor (full-time) for two years. Depending on an evaluation after the contract period, the appointment can be extended or become permanent. You will be appointed for 38 hours per week. The starting date will be preferably March 1st, 2020. The university offers a dynamic ecosystem; internationalization is an important part of the strategic agenda. The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labor Agreement for Universities (CAO).
