Job description

The candidate will contribute to fundamental design knowledge and methods in understanding and shaping energy related behaviour. In the context of the energy transition, the role of energy prosumers will be considered towards fostering energy democracy, given use and sharing of renewable energy resources along with technologies such as machine learning, the Internet of Things and blockchain. At the societal level the work will contribute to the adoption of energy-efficient practices in existing and energy-efficient houses and commercial buildings.

More broadly, the tenure tracker should aim to develop an understanding of how design can fulfill individual needs and improve long-term personal well-being, while contributing to healthy and sustainable living and work, by impacting people’s behaviour, experience, and practices. An understanding of the social, cultural, economic, and ethical values of energy use and consumption in everyday life would be valued.

Requirements

Candidates should have a PhD-degree in design, the social sciences or other related fields. Candidates should preferably also have a Post Doc or the equivalent of at least two years of post-PhD experience. The candidate should have experience with research through design, participatory design, and methods for behavioural change and ethnographic field techniques. Prototyping and data visualization skills would be an asset for this position. Experience and demonstrated leadership skills in working with multiple stakeholders, including the public and private sectors is a plus.

We are looking for colleagues who can excel in an interdisciplinary environment where designers and researchers work independently across research groups, and together contribute to the larger research agenda of the department. Candidates should be at ease in conducting interdisciplinary work at the intersection between practice, research, and education. Through research and teaching, candidates should be able to inspire colleagues and students. Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: Tenure Track.

At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant or Associate Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leaders and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. A tenure track position for Assistant/Associate Professor is offered within the department of Industrial Design (ID). The department ID is recognized as an international leader in design research and was ranked excellent by an international review panel in 2015. Our research and education focusing on topics like design for happiness, prototyping in design thinking, design aesthetics, future interactions, ergonomics and social design. The department also houses the ID-StudioLab, a unique interdisciplinary design research community that facilitates design-driven research and education. We believe that a professional designer needs scientific knowledge and the skills to use systematic methods, techniques and tools. We teach future designers to conceptualize products and services that are understandable and stimulate meaningful experiences. We develop and improve the knowledge and skills that help designers and researchers contribute to relevant societal challenges and to have an impact.

The position is part of the sustainability theme in the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. The theme covers a wide spectrum of sustainability principles, including circular design, consumer behavior and design for behavior change. The latter theme is central to this position. The department of Industrial Design is active in the Urban Energy platform https://www.tudelft.nl/tu-delft-urban-energy and PowerWeb institute https://www.tudelft.nl/powerweb-institute/. These groups serve to link research on Energy with other activities at the university level, including joint projects on campus. The department is also involved in a number of national and European projects relating to energy and behavior, including the recently granted ENERGE project.
