Maastricht University is looking for an educational leader to further strengthen the educational profile of Maastricht University in the Engineering domain.

Job description

Since September 2011, Maastricht University has developed bachelor and master education in the natural sciences. Currently, the total enrolment of the Faculty of Science and Engineering is about 2000 students from over 50 countries. It is the ambition of Maastricht University to further strengthen these programmes. In addition, new science and engineering programmes are currently being developed.

We are searching for a talented and motivated candidate with a solid background in engineering to join our team as director of studies. Initial focus of the appointment will be on the further development and educational management of a new bachelor programme in Circular Engineering. The new Maastricht bachelor Circular Engineering will combine the disciplines of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Engineering Physics in one exciting interdisciplinary degree programme with a focus on sustainability. With the growth of the faculty, the director may also become involved in the development of new programmes as well as facilitating synergy between existing programmes. The position will report directly to the Faculty Board and will become part of the educational management team of the faculty.

The candidate should have a strong educational track record in a relevant field of Circular Engineering, including prior experience in educational management, accreditation and programme development, preferably in an international setting. The candidate needs to have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, since this is an important focus area of this position. In addition to educational management, the candidate will be responsible for developing and teaching courses, skills and projects. The candidate will also have the opportunity to supervise thesis students in their research and design endeavours. The expectation is that the educational management position will be 0.4 to 0.5 fte. The remainder of the time will focus on research and educational activities, depending on the qualifications and interests of the candidate. Candidates with a multidisciplinary interest and willingness to cross boundaries between disciplines are especially encouraged to apply. The programmes at the Faculty of Science and Engineering are characterized by small-scale student-centred education. The director of studies is expected to become an active part of our community, advising students, mentoring staff, organizing activities, building a scientific network for our students and staff to explore and establishing contacts with other faculties within Maastricht, the Netherlands and across the world.

The programme in Circular Engineering is closely linked to new Maastricht research institutes, bridging various engineering disciplines in an interdisciplinary manner and trains students as circular engineers who are able to provide technical solutions in the transition to a circular economy. The programme is partially offered at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus near Geleen, surrounded by industry, the Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo, in close proximity to important agri-food players, and the Brightlands Health Campus in Maastricht, which also contains the Maastricht UMC+ hospital. The director of studies ensures that good working relationships with academic and industrial partners on the different campuses are established and maintained.
