Job description

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate to join the Biomolecular Electron Nanoscopy group of Dr. Arjen Jakobi at the Department of Bionanoscience, Kavli Institute of Nanoscience Delft (http://cryoem.tudelft.nl). Our laboratory studies molecular mechanisms of the host machinery mediating defense against invading pathogens using a structural biology approach that integrates cryo-EM imaging with (single-molecule) biophysics, protein biochemistry and cell biology. We also develop and apply new approaches for cryo-EM imaging to facilitate meeting our research goals.

You will develop an entirely new sample preparation method for (correlative) snapshot imaging of dynamic biological processes by single-particle cryo-EM and cryo-tomography. You will design and implement the optical components for this setup, automate target localization and implement workflows for automated handover to the cryo-preparation unit. In collaboration with other members of the laboratory you will apply the setup to the imaging of membrane remodelling processes during infection, both in reconstituted liposomes and in cellular model systems.
Training will be provided in nanofabrication and precision engineering, fluorescence microscopy, cryo-EM/-ET and associated image-processing. Further details of the project will be discussed during the interviews. A contract for 4 years will be offered to the successful candidate.

We offer a dynamic, supportive and collegial environment with access to state-of-the art facilities. The Department of Bionanoscience will provide outstanding infrastructure for nanofabrication, fluorescence microscopy molecular/cell biology, biochemistry, single-molecule biophysics, transmission electron microscopy and high-performance computing for image processing.

Requirements

The candidate should have a M.Sc. degree in nanoscience, micro-/nanosystems engineering, (bio)physics or a related field, ideally with research experience in precision instrumentation, and enthusiasm for working at the interface of biology, chemistry, and physics. Prior expertise in fluorescence microscopy and/or nanofabrication is strongly desired. Previous experience with electron microscopy is beneficial, but not required. We are looking for a candidate with a high level of intellectual creativity and genuine interest in fundamental research, who has the motivation and ability to work in an international and interdisciplinary team. Good communication skills in English are essential.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. Coming to Delft Service organizes diverse events for new international employees and their accompanying partners, like Partner Career Workshops and Dutch Culture Workshops. Located on campus are the International Children’s Centre and an international primary school which are subject to availability as well as several bilingual schools in the nearby surrounding. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School. TU Delft Graduate School provides an inspiring research environment; an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff and a mentor; and a Doctoral Education Programme aimed at developing your transferable, discipline-related and research skills. Department

Faculty Applied Sciences

The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of TU Delft, with around 550 scientists, a support staff of 250 and 1,800 students. The faculty conducts fundamental, application-oriented research and offers scientific education at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The faculty is active in the fields of Life and Health Science & Technology, Nanoscience, Chemical Engineering, Radiation Science & Technology, and Applied Physics.

The Department of Bionanoscience, part of the Faculty of Applied Sciences at Delft University of Technology and part of the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience Delft (http://kavli.tudelft.nl/), is dedicated to pioneering, fundamental research at the interface between physics and biology. This young, international department was established in 2010 and has since expanded to currently 17 faculty members. The department offers excellent general facilities, including an advanced optical microscopy facility, a cryo-EM facility, extensive general cell biology and biochemistry facilities, and a large cleanroom facility, the Kavli Nanolab Delft. The department strives for a collegial, nourishing, and inclusive environment.
