We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague who will develop a new line of research within the field of crustal tectonics focused on, for example, geothermal energy, carbon storage/sequestration, basin analysis, crustal seismology, economic geology, fault/fracture dynamics or fluid flow. The position involves teaching in structural geology and tectonics at the BSc and MSc level, and supervision of BSc and MSc research projects. Management tasks will be part of the job, including an opportunity to lead and further develop the ‘subsurface resources’ stream in our MSc Earth Sciences programme.

Your duties

• Carry out creative research in the field of crustal tectonics by acquiring external funding and publishing your results in high-profile journals
• Make impact on the field as witnessed by citations and presentations at (international) meetings
• Translate your expertise into effective collaborations with partners in academia and/or industry
• Apply your knowledge to tackle societal issues related to sustainability and/or natural hazards
• Acquire external funding for research
• Build up a successful research group and supervise PhD students
• Coordinate and teach courses offered in BSc and MSc Earth Science programmes
• Contribute to teaching curriculum development in the area of subsurface resources
• Participate in management tasks of the department

• You have completed a PhD degree in the Earth Sciences, specializing in tectonics, structural geology or geodynamics
• You have several years of research experience (proven by publications) and/or at least 2 years of experience in non-academic research organisations or related industry (proven by publications/ reports and project acquisition)
• You have demonstrated the ability to initiate and build up an independent line of research
• You have experience in teaching (development and/or coordination of courses) in the field of Earth Sciences
• You have a basic teaching qualification (BKO), an equivalent qualification from a university outside the Netherlands, or are willing to obtain such a qualification during your tenure track
• Although not a requirement at the date of appointment, it is expected that you will reach a C1 level in both Dutch and English before the end of your tenure track. The BSc courses in the department are taught in Dutch, while the MSc courses are taught in English

Fixed-term contract: 1 year.

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3,637 (scale 11) and a maximum €4,978 (scale 11), depending on your education and experience. The job profile is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for 0.8 - 1 FTE.
 
We offer a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor, initially for the duration of 6 years. Within an agreed period, tenure could be achieved if the faculty criteria for Assistant Professor are fulfilled. During the tenure, the performance will be evaluated in terms of teaching, publication record, and acquisition of prestigious personal grants or equivalent project funding. After a successful evaluation, permanent employment will be granted.
 
The tenure track position is starting at the level of assistant professor in the areas of research, teaching and management (40% : 40% : 20%).

The Department of Earth Sciences has ~35 permanent staff, and is responsible for the BSc and MSc programmes in Earth Sciences and contributes to teaching programmes in Hydrology and Earth Sciences & Economics. Research in the department is focused on two general areas: Geology & Geochemistry and Earth & Climate. The Department’s excellence in teaching is underlined by its high scores in annual national student evaluations.
