Post-Doctoral Researcher / Lecturer (f/m, 0,8 to 1.0 FTE) in the Sociology of Media, Culture and Society

Functieomschrijving

We are looking for a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Researcher and Lecturer who will both conduct research and fulfill coordination and organisational tasks in the context of a in a large-scale research project funded by the European Commission and teach in our undergraduate and graduate education programmes. The research and organisational tasks will be part of our coordination of the project INVENT: European inventory of societal values of culture as a basis for inclusive cultural policies in the globalizing world. The INVENT consortium will conduct large-scale empirical research in nine European countries to specify how conceptions and values of culture are constructed across different socio-economic groups. Special attention will be paid to people’s perceptions and evaluations of how trends of globalization, digitization and increasing inequalities have impacted culture.

 

A PhD in Media and Communication, Sociology, Arts and Culture Studies or other Social Sciences is required, with demonstrated competencies in advanced quantitative research methods. In particular, experience with digital research methods is welcomed.  The candidate is expected to possess strong organizational as well as didactic skills and an affinity for working with students.

 

Research duties (50%)

  • Conducting research within the framework of the INVENT project;
  • Contributing to the data collection and data analysis of the project;
  • Publishing and presenting research results in the form of policy briefings, reports, articles in international peer reviewed journals, and papers at international meetings and conferences;
  • Participating in and contributing to project meetings and workshops;
  • Taking part in seminars, workshops, etc. that are organised by the Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC) as well as the research schools and scholarly associations of which ERMeCC is part.

 

Organisational duties (30%)

  • Performing a variety of coordination and organisational tasks in the context of the INVENT project;
  • Coordinating and contributing to the project’s deliverables as regards ethics and data-management; 
  • Coordinating and contributing to the organisation and dissemination of project activities and findings to a wider academic and non-academic audience, among others via social media, the project’s website, workshops and conferences.

 

Teaching duties (20%)

  • Preparing and teaching courses within the context of the various degree programmes in the field of Media and Communication provided by the ESHCC;
  • Monitoring the literature and integrating new insight into the education programme;
  • Supervising and coaching students;Contributing to the progress and innovation of our educational programs, both in terms of content and teaching methods.
  • Contributing to the evaluation of the evaluation  both in terms of structure and execution;
  • Participating in committees or working groups, as well as performing designated organisational tasks.

Functie-eisen

  • A PhD in Media and Communication, Sociology, Arts and Culture Studies or other Social Sciences;
  • Strong research and analysis skills, particularly with innovative and advanced quantitative methods of data collection and analysis;
  • Proven affinity for empirical research, as evidenced by your research work, publications, research plans and other projects;
  • Strong organisational experience and skills;
  • Didactic potential. Teaching experience is desired;
  • A willingness to develop knowledge and skills in new areas and to increase the ability to teach a wide range of subjects within the faculty’s degree programmes;
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English. Non-English speakers have to meet the C2-standards of the Common European Framework (CEF).

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

Employment is intended to start 1 May, 2020. The contract runs for a term of 33 months, after a probationary period. Potential for extending the contract is dependent on financing and performance. The conditions of employment correspond with the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Universities (CAO NU). Salary is subject to training and experience and corresponds to Scale 10 or 11 NU, with a minimum of € 2.709 (scale 10, grade 0) and a maximum of € 4.978 (scale 11, grade 11) gross per month on a 38 hour per week contract.

 

The EUR has attractive employment conditions, which include a holiday allowance of 8.0%, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and 41 annual vacation days in case of a full workweek.
