Job description

Your research will involve studying the eye-head gaze-orienting control system in complex multisensory re-orienting sensorimotor tasks in healthy volunteers and sensory deprived patients. Your work will particularly focus on eye-head smooth-pursuit control strategies in response to moving sound sources in the two-dimensional frontal hemifield. Key words: computational modelling, optimal control, multisensory integration, moving sounds, vestibular stimulation.

You will perform advanced psychophysical studies (recordings of 3D eye-head motor responses) with top-notch unique experimental equipment, and report on your research results in regular group meetings, and in high-impact scientific publications.

We want to get the best out of science, others and ourselves. Why? Because this is what the world around us desperately needs. Leading research and education make an indispensable contribution to a healthy, free world with equal opportunities for all. This is what unites the more than 22,000 students and 5,000 employees at Radboud University. And this requires even more talent and collaboration. You have a part to play!

Department

Faculteit der Natuurwetenschappen, Wiskunde & Informatica

You will participate in the psychophysics subproject of the ORIENT research project, which is an ERC advanced grant project, awarded to Prof. John van Opstal by the EU Horizon 2020 programme. The ORIENT project also involves a collaboration with the Visual Robotics lab at the Instituto Técnico in Lisbon. ORIENT's overall mission is to understand the neural mechanisms of sensory processing and goal-directed motor control in complex multisensory environments, in health and disease.

Prof. John van Opstal's research group studies sensory-motor integration in an interdisciplinary setting with unique state-of-the-art methodologies in well-equipped research labs and advanced computational facilities. Research at the Department of Biophysics is embedded in the Donders Centre for Neuroscience at the Faculty of Science, which is part of the campus-wide Donders Institute (the largest research institute at Radboud University employing 600 FTEs). The Donders Institute has a dedicated Graduate School where PhDs and postdocs receive training in modern research and analysis techniques, and develop an academic and ethical attitude towards systems neuroscience applications. In this project you will have intensive contacts with the PhD and postdoctoral researcher currently working on the psychophysics subproject, Bachelor’s and Master’s interns from the Faculty, and our Lisbon colleagues.
