Job description

This Postdoc position will be part of a project in collaboration with the Sailing Innovation Centre (sailinginnovationcentre.nl), whose goal is to create excitement for the sailing sport by involving modern technologies.

A sailing athlete has to consider complex information; the boat, the wind, the sea currents and more to decide how to act and react. While athletes are trained in combining these factors, for external observers, their decisions are not always clear. Further, many of the factors that went into the decision are not directly available and it is quite difficult to follow a competition without the necessary background knowledge. The goal of this project is to make the information understandable and accessible to a larger audience to improve the engagement of the observers.

The postdoc will contribute with new and exciting ways to interact with the sport that will also lead to cutting-edge research in Computer Graphics, Visualization, or other related fields. The candidate will actively contribute in designing and developing the appropriate solution and will have freedom in choosing the methodology and technology that best fits his research background and ambitions, such as, Visualization methods, Virtual and Augmented Reality technologies, new Interaction modalities, Simulations, Game technologies, among others.

The project is supported by many partners, including several companies providing streaming models and sailing-related data via sensors and the candidate will work closely with a PhD student, who is investigating data models to discover patterns in order to improve training analysis. The work will further be developed in a practical setting with strong collaboration with the sailors, coaches, and other members of the Sailing Innovation Center. The developed research is intended to be employed in future sailing competitions by the Dutch Sailing Team.

Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

The Faculty of EEMCS brings together three disciplines - electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make future-proof. We are also working on a world in which humans and computers strengthen each other. We are mapping out disease processes using single-cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. There is plenty of room for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1,100 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this challenging environment.

The Faculty includes two Computer Science Departments (Intelligent Systems and Software Technology). The two departments closely work together both in research and in education. The departments jointly employ 60 faculty members as well as 10 teaching faculty aimed at supporting the delivery of world class computer science education at a substantial scale.

The two departments conduct world leading research in the major computer science disciplines. Their research programs comprise a balanced mix of curiosity-driven foundational research, and use-inspired research in such application domains as health and well-being, creative industry, fintech, logistics, and energy.

Located in a charming college town, TU Delft is the largest and oldest public technological university in the Netherlands.
