Are you looking for a PhD position to help rethink news recommenders to nudge users towards more diverse news consumption? In this project, an interdisciplinary team consisting of experts from Law, Computational Linguistics, Computer Science and Communication Science will study what recommendations and presentation choices optimize the diversity of consumed news. Will you help us fix the way news is spread in the 21st century? Please apply at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Job description

In this project you will work on modelling news consumer reactions to algorithmic recommendations to find out how to optimise the recommendations and presentation to maximize the diversity of consumed news. This involves finding a balance between maximizing a normative idea of diversity and presenting news that users find interesting enough to read, and to present and explain the choices in a way to nudge users towards diverse consumption. The experiments that you will conduct form a crucial bridge between the normative model of diversity and the actual design and implementation of the news algorithms, giving you an opportunity to work closely with the other experts on the team.

The project starting date is 1 September 2020. See http://ccs.amsterdam/projects/rethinking-news-algorithms/ for more details on the project, and contact us for the full project description. Your duties
  • Conduct research within the scope of the project culminating in a successful dissertation
  • Writing journal articles and presenting your work on conferences
  • Collaborating with the other junior and senior researchers on the team
