Job description

Candidates whose mathematical expertise can contribute to the further development of the life sciences, especially in the themes Mathematics in Systems Biology and Ecology and Risk Assessment in Food Safety and Health. Relevant expertises include, but are not limited to, applied analysis, dynamical systems, pattern formation, data assimilation, (stochastic) differential equations, mathematical modelling, mathematical biology and mathematical ecology. In addition to mathematical expertise, we expect candidates to have an active interest in life sciences and be able to translate life science problems into mathematical modelling questions. We expect that you possess, or develop, skills in writing research proposals and in attracting PhDs and external funding. Furthermore, you should be a stimulating teacher, and contribute to the international profile of the group.

Applied Mathematics
The chair group of Applied Mathematics (from September 2020 headed by Peter van Heijster) is part of Biometris. Biometris, one of the largest groups of quantitative scientists in North-Western Europe, develops mathematical and statistical methods for the quantification of biological processes and processes in our living environment. These methods are applied and validated in practice and are often available as software packages. In addition, we provide education at the undergraduate, Master, PhD, and Postdoc levels, as well as training and consultancy for industry. We cover a wide range of application areas, from gene to ecosystem and from product to production chain. Our goal is to bring quantitative methods to life!
  • you have a strong track record in research in the area of applied mathematics or related fields as is clear from work done in PhD and postdoc or assistant professor positions;
  • you are able to contribute to developments in applied mathematics in one or more of the key themes of the group (Mathematics in Systems Biology and Ecology, Risk Assessment in Food Safety and Health) and to develop your own research line;
  • you are a motivating teacher with proven experience in developing and teaching mathematical courses to life scientists, both at elementary and more advanced levels;
  • you have the ambition and potential to be successful in obtaining research grants in competitive funding schemes to fund your own research;
  • you are a team player and team builder with a keen interest in collaborative research and willing to contribute to the general tasks of the chair group;

Evaluation on job performance takes place every 3-4 years, and a positive outcome will lead to a permanent position after 7 years.
Depending on your experience, a competitive salary from a minimum of € 3637,- to a maximum of € 4978,- (per month) for a full working week of 38 hours in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities (scale 11). You also have the opportunity to work 40 hours a week with additional holidays.

More about Biometris
Biometris is the central group for mathematics and statistics at Wageningen University and Research Centre. The group consists of about 75 people, 50 permanent staff and 25 PhDs and postdocs. Education and consultation are pivotal for the societal role of Biometris. Education is at the very heart of the university and Biometris provides all BSc courses on mathematics and statistics at Wageningen UR, as well as numerous other courses for MSc and PhD students, post-docs and industry. Biometris also provides statistical and mathematical consultancy and training to researchers inside and outside Wageningen UR.
