Job description

Are you an ICT expert with interest in scientific high performance computing? We are seeking an enthusiastic colleague who will administer the ICT infrastructure of our research institute and facilitates computational scientists in their research projects.

What are you going to do?

You will  be the first point of contact for computer facilities in our institute and you will participate in research and help creating software tools. You will take care of purchasing and administrating regular equipment, and moreover of the design, installation, maintenance, and management of HPC facilities.

You will be affiliated with the Computational Chemistry group of our institute, but you will also work for the whole institute.

 Your tasks include:

  • being responsible for the institute’s local high-performance computing cluster;
  • participate in research and help developing software tools related to computational chemistry, possibly support student supervision;
  • train students, researchers and collaborators in the use of (HP) computer facilities and allied methods;
  • manage hardware/software for individual users within our institute and help self-support users in setting-up and using their computers and support materials;
  • management of the groups’ webserver and website and institutes’ research data database;
  • being the institutes’ ICT contact person for staff and external parties such as the faculty and the national supercomputer center at SURF‑SARA;
  • occasionally participate in outreach activities such as open days.

Requirements

You must:

  • have an BSc /hbo in Computer Science and/or closely related areas;
  • have knowledge of MacOS, Windows, Linux operating systems;
  • have knowledge of cluster management software such as grid engine, torque or slurm;
  • be able to switch quickly and be a creative problem solver with perseverance;
  • have an excellent command of both Dutch and English languages;
  • be self-motivated, willing to learn new skills and have very good communication, organisation, and time management skills.

If you have an interest in molecular sciences and proven knowledge of Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Statistics you will be considered favourably. If you do not meet these requirements your application will not be considered.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: one year.

Our offer

A temporary contract for 32 to 38 hours per week, starting as soon as possible for the duration of 1 year, with possible extension depending on your performance.

The salary, depending on relevant experience before the beginning of the employment contract, will be €2,835 to €4,274 gross per month, based on full-time employment (38 hours a week). These amounts are exclusive 8 % holiday allowance and 8,3 % end-of-year bonus. A favorable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants.The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

The Faculty of Science has a student body of around 6,500, as well as 1,600 members of staff working in education, research or support services. The Van't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) is one of eight institutes of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) Faculty of Science. HIMS performs internationally recognized chemistry research, curiosity driven as well as application driven. This is done in close cooperation with the chemical, flavor & food, medical and high-tech industries. Research is organized into four themes: Synthesis & Catalysis, Analytical Chemistry, Computational Chemistry and Molecular Photonics.
