The department of Animal Ecology at NIOO-KNAW offers a position for a Post-doc on Long-term studies of individuals.
Project description:
The Studies of Populations of Individuals - Birds (SPI-Birds) Database is a searchable collection of long-term studies on the breeding biology of individually marked birds across Eurasia (see https://nioo.knaw.nl/en/spi-birds). All the datasets in the database are converted into a standard format by SPI-Birds Developers team, making analysis across all populations feasible. We are looking for a post-doc to join this team. In addition, the post-doc can run an own research project using the data in the database. As a part of Developers team, the post-doc will code pipelines in R to convert data into the standardized format and will be involved in other aspects of running the SPI Birds Network, which includes interacting with researchers across the world. The topic for the scientific project is flexible, and will be developed in interaction with the post-doc.
We are looking for a candidate with a PhD degree in ecology or related fields, who is highly motivated and has an interest in data standards and research networks. We are looking for somebody with a high proficiency in R. Familiarity with LaTeX and basic knowledge of Python and SQL, as well as with long-term studies of individuals (not necessarily birds), is encouraged. Good communication skills in English (written and spoken) and the ability to work in a team environment is essential as this project is in close collaboration with a large number of research groups across the world.
Appointment:
This is a temporary appointment for one year at the NIOO-KNAW Animal Ecology Department (full time). Starting date is 1 September 2020.
Salary:
Salary depends on training and work experience. The gross salary starts at € 3.353,- (scale 10.4) per month based on a full-time appointment, Collective Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten), excluding 8% holiday pay and a 8,3% year-end bonus. We offer an extensive package of fringe benefits.
